How does it work? Does it mean that I can upload PDF file from mac to this folder on iPad and any application will read it?

No applications can not share between applications, what this sharing means is that an application can now implement a feature where a file can be saved to the /Documents folder on the iPad, and it is exposed via iTunes in the "Apps" tab. And also an application that supports this can receive files via the "Add" button in the Apps tab.

The only examples I have seen thus far of actually implementing this are the iWork apps.

What shared folder are you talking about ?

wiki says "Allows transferring files between a computer and the device for a shared document store that all applications can access. Only available for the iPad."

oh okay. I wonder why Apple don't want to create something like shared folder where every application could store its documents and have an access to it.
