iPhone OS X vs. Other Phone OS

I was curious about the iPhone OS X after the post: Prediction: the iPhone will lead to more software on Windows. I just wanted to post this to see the differences and similarities and new news about iPhone OS.

iPHONE OS X VS. WINDOWS MOBILE 6.0

Let's compare iPhone OS X with Windows Mobile 6.0, the newest smartphone OS.

Windows Mobile 6.0 also has Mobile Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (there was a commercial about Microsoft with a business man having his smartphone and took a flight to another city giving a presentation with the phone only). iPhone, oh the other hand, does not, or so it seems from the Keynote. I don't reacall the website having anything about that too. So a +1 for Windows Mobile so far and a 0 for iPhone OS X.

But credit does go to iPhone for internet. We know that in Windows Vista, many of the features were copied from Safari and FireFox, generally improving Internet Explorer (though it is really slow). Safari is now avaliable in the iPhone while Internet Explorer has not really improved itself through the upgrades in Windows Mobile. In the keynote and website, Apple has a far better internet browser than Windows Mobile, a +1 for Apple.

In terms of style OS, Apple wins again obviously +1. Windows Mobile is kind of ugly (haha...). The only nice Windows Mobile I have seen so far is Samsung's Version of the iPhone, the F700. And yes, that 3.5G phone does use Windows Mobile.

Mail clients, Apple and Windows both tie in this case. Both of their mail programs seem advance and do the job just fine for a mobile device. In this case, both OSs get a +1.

Maps... apple wins again +1. No doubt about it.

Media player, apple wins again +1. iTunes and Windows Media Player, I don't have to explain myself do I?

With third-party software however, Windows Mobile +1 is of course the winner. Apple does not want to have other software. That means Games, software, etc. all come from Apple (or so it seems). I was going to give +2 to Windows, but Apple does support widgets.

So iPhone OS X does win by 5 to 3. Maybe I'll do one with iPhone OS vs. Symbian. Any one else have any comments? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm an open person so I'll accept all types of comments.

You are actually wrong on maps, because Google Maps, yes, the exact same Google Maps that will be available on the iPhone, is already available for Windows Mobile. I use it all the time:

I guess you never seen windows Live Search which is included with many phones and can be downloaded for free. The software includes traffic updates, directions and of course a map. I dunno how much better than the what google offers so yeah.

The interface that is subjective, but I guess we will have to wait for it to come out to see how really functional it is.

Forget Internet Explorer when you use Opera Mini or Opera Mobile for free. There is also Firefox base beta browser called minimo for WM based touch screen devices. But yeah IE for WM terrible and that where Apple can take advantage.

Its called DeepFish. Its already on its 2nd iteration of Beta and it looks like it WILL replace the Pocket IE that we know of today!

Remember the pioneering partnership between Apple & Nokia for Nokia's new Nokia Browser thats now standard in ALL S60 3RD Edition devices?! Most of that KHTML work was done by Apple. However, non of Nokia's sites give Apple credit any longer.

That page switching, zooming in, grid viewing a page, etc all of that is copied into the new DEEPFish browser because its open sourced.

Apple has a nice & unique touch to it though, pun intended.

me I'm personally very impressed with my BB's stable OS. uptime is pretty good thus far. However I dont have A2DP for Stereo BT - something I don't see iPhone quoted as supporting which I PRAY Apple hasn't overseen.

We'll see.

Of course Apple's OS X would be much better. I love Apple and I love every single apple product. Technically we don't know about iphone OS X is really like, but we can make inferences through Keynotes and Apple Website. That's how I came up with all my information. HAHA Don't know if any of it is right XD. But I agree, if you say the post is useless when ppl are making comparisons, I don't really think it's useless because it is a really strong word. But yes iPhone OS X will rock others.

But will the general market like it... that's the question... especially their desired target group. I don't have a Blackberry, but what is it like to have one. I really want to know... And how will Apple be able to take some of the Blackberry market? If someone has a blackberry, they should also compare the email clients with Apple's Mail...

I didn't know they have a Firefox one... Cool though.... I'm pretty sure IE will start to update itself in Windows Mobile 7

I thought I read somewhere that Jobs was concentrating on developing a ton of unique applications for iPhone–which would be the best solution in my opinion. The last thing I want is a bunch of standard-less user interfaces to clutter up such a clean device.

Apple is already in the works with the new iLife to replace all those crappy Office programs like Word & Excel so mac users don't have to deal with Microsoft's clumpy interface designs. I could see pocket versions of these iLife essentials making it to iPhone, and I really wish all these people complaining about the lack of these kinds of programs would shut it until it's confirmed that the phone will or will not support these formats / business apps.

I'm so sick of people complaining about this phone!! It is going to rock, and all other Apple-loving smartphone users will either do the right thing and buy an iPhone or forever be extreme iPhone haters because their Windows Mobile 6 device has support for third party applications (which really brings down the user experience anyway).

They could have a 3rd party platform, but I also believe that it would be very controlled. Now that I think about it, PagesToGo and iWorkToGo would probably be better than anything than what MS's mac department would make, and I just remembered that iWork can open .doc's and .ppt's.

I personally think windows mobile, to put it bluntly, sucks. I think Palm and OS X would be a better comparison. Also, I think the comparison mentioned here isn't fair cause your trying to compare a business phone to the iPhone. Lets face it, the iPhone isn't exactly meant for business owners, but I guess we'll see what software apple makes available to please the mobile business man.

^True, I do agree... but then Apple is also trying to target that kind of audience, as stated somewhere in this forum. But Windows Mobile still lost to the iPhone. Unfortunately, I don't have a Palm so I can't compare the two. And I don't have a blackberry, though I want to see how easy it is to use one for emailing.

Now I wonder if Apple's iPhone Mail have Blackberry connect in it? Many new Symbian phones have it, such as Nokia E50, Sony Ericsson P990i, etc.

Let's hope the new iWork can open more office documents, such as .docx and .pptx, although not a lot of people actually have Office 2007.

We might see in WM6 as this version of WM includes a live update feature that is suppose to not cost you airtime or data useage(or so I read?). But Yeah I tired Firefox on my last WM device in beta, it was solid prodcut but buggy. Tried it on my current phone and it better and nicer but froze as my phone has crappy memory.

I would beg to disagree we really do not know how easy the iPhone really is. It may look easy to use but untill it fully comes out that just an assumption. And how is WM not easy to use? Granted it is a little more complicated than Palm os and even Symbian OS, it can be easy to use.

I think it's safe to say that the iPhone will have a great user interface.

You have to remember, this is Steve's baby. Jobs, the man who wouldn't let the iPod pass inspection until he could find a song in 5 seconds.

I have a feeling that the iPhone will sometime be opened up to 3rd parties, and there will be a ton of killer apps for it. I imagine that Apple doesn't want people developing for the iPhone for 6-12 months after they release it. They need to create documentation, Xcode templates, whatever. They also need to work out the 1.0 release bugs. I doubt they want buggy 3rd party apps to contribute.

From what I've seen about Apple's latest consumer electronic product, the Apple TV, I'm psyched about the iPhone. Apple doesn't stop you from putting regular OS X on the Apple TV, or Linux, or plug ins. (Which is another thing interesting about the Apple TV; there's a plug-in architecture. Apple hasn't released anything official, but there is one. I'm sure they'll release docs on it sometime.) They have a great interface for the Apple TV, but can be replaced if you want, which is really the great thing about OS X, it's simple enough for grandma, but deep enough for geeks.

As always on this forum, it's all speculation. We'll see when it comes out. I know I'm going to the Apple store this summer to see if it's good enough, if not: I'll get a Motophone F3.
