iPhone Passes Blackberry in Global Shipments

"In the race for worldwide smartphone dominance, Apple has finally passed Research In Motion. During this year's third quarter, 15.4 million iPhones were shipped globally compared to only 12.4 million Blackberries, the researchers at Strategy Analytics reported yesterday," John P. Mello Jr. reports for PCWorld.

"With the shipments, Apple grabbed a 15.4 percent share of the market during the period, while RIM finished well behind with a 12.3 percent share," Mello reports. "Top dog in the kennel, though, remains Nokia with 26.5 percent of the worldwide market."

It'll only get worse for RICS (Research In Complete Standstill.)

Nokia's next.

Once there's a Verizon iPhone, you can imagine the result for the also-rans.

Passing them 3Q is not worth much and you should know it. 3Q has the pent up demand from 2Q for the iPhone released in it every year so it gets a huge spike then drops back down. Lets see what the 4Q and 1Qs look like and get back to me.
Rim tends to have a lot of its releases 4Q. The Pearl 3G I believe is coming out on more carriers and I know they have quite a few other phones slated to come out. The Touch is still rolling out on a lot of carriers so it should get a boost in 3Q. Torch was pretty heavily limited to only AT&T during the 3Q and was not release until late 3Q for most of the world.

It seems that the Blackberry is better for typing - or so according to my friends, while the iPhone is better for surfing.

Yes, the exact same thing happened in 2008.

The new iPhone 3G outsold RIM when it came out.

Then RIM came back with their new models.

Happens every year, it seems.

Shhh...
Do not tell that to *LTD*. It would blow his mind being slap with a little truth and history and I do not want to have to clean up the mess. Exploded minds smells and looks nasty.

This aint 2008.

the App Store is in full swing, Apple had a $20 billion quarter, and iOS is making waves. And all RIM has . . . is what they had in 2008, plus a new phone that's beginning to resemble a bad iPhone copy rather than the usual dated Blackberry design.

Apple has an entire ecosystem built around and complementing the iPhone that is rapidly expansive, influential, and wildly popular. RIM has BBM and a fast-eroding hold on the enterprise sector. Guess which platform holds the most promise.

RIM needs to pull off the revolutionary and the radical in order to stay in the game. Jobs' vocal dismissal of the platform didn't help, either. When Jobs speaks, the industry listens, and has an interesting tendency of moving in his direction.

Umm clearly you did not read my post.
I pointed out that the touch was only on AT&T and had not been rolled out world wide for most of the 3Q.

Also RIM has most of their roll outs of new phones happen in the 4Q or late 3Q which means you have to look at those numbers.

You can not get around the fact that 3Q for iPhones is artificially high because of the massive pent up demand from 2Q.

Unfortunately for RIM, Christmas is just around the corner, which will belong to Apple.

And if this is true, RIM's in even more trouble:

It is ironic the comparison in Apple and RIM as companies ...

Blackberry's strength is their own secure email operating system (that is why the President uses one) reminds me of Windows trying to take on OSX

Apple is more concerned with an App store with 300,000 apps ... RIM has a business client base because of their operating system. Yeah they have a few apps for the Kids but that is not their focus.

their business is email.

You do know posting something link to an apple fanboy site and career building really does not say jack crap about anything. That company also happens to do bussiness with AT&T. Smart phones are a huge growing market across the board. So it proves nothing.

Also going onto verizon I see little in really increasing the iPhones total sales. You will see a spike as people jump ship but after that it will more than likely stay around current numbers and market share.

It was tough choosing b/w the Bold and iPhone, but ultimately the iPhone seems way more versatile. Though I'm sad in some sense b/c Blackberry is Canadian.

One thing to note: shipments do not necessarily equate to sales.

That said, RIM is doing itself no favors with its products, such as the Storm 2. I can't wait to ditch mine to something else (not an iPhone though).

Good point.

Whereas other phone makers report end-user sales, Apple reports shipments from their factory.

In the past, this has been used to boost their numbers when they felt the need. It's usually at least 10% above actual end sales for the period.

So 15.4 million might really be more like 14 million or less.

It usually takes another quarterly report to figure this out, as then they'll make a comment about emptying the inventory channel. Of cousre, by then most reporters have forgotten about the previous numbers.

I disagree completely. There's surveys showing high demand for a Verizon iPhone, Apple will double it's US market share within two years. There's plenty of people who won't leave Verizon and will get the iPhone when it does arrive on Verizon.

RIM sold 12.4 million Blackberries. How many of those are buy on get one free? RIM doesn't make the revenue or profit that Apple does with the iPhone. Lets keep this in mind there's not going to be one OS that's the rules all.

I don't know if Apple can outsell Blackberry again next quarter but it should be close with Apple still rolling out the iP4 around the world.

I agree. In a state where you almost have to have Verizon as a carrier in order to get consistent and reliable reception, AT&T is almost non-existent. As a matter of fact, if I try to buy an iPhone thru apple or AT&T they won't even sell it to me. If iPhone becomes available thru Verizon, sales will definitely go up even if there are no switch overs from AT&T. I don't think Verizon is any better than AT&T, they will start using a tiered data plan more than likely. It just that for this area of the country the iPhone will become available and people will switch there phones to it.

I'll go on the record on this issue. RIM will surpass Apple again. This quarter was Apple's quarter due to the release of their new toy. Down the road, the story will be different.

Also, big note...

Shipped units =/= sold units

Those shipped units could all well be in stock at stores right now, or may be used as warranty replacement iPhones for all we know.

True. Apple has to keep huge number of those on hand since it seems some people burn threw 4+ phones before they are happy.

There is no evidence for this. You're actually alleging that Apple's share numbers are higher because of additional shipments via warranty replacements??

So what? Just because it's not written in stone (or a sales graph as you like), it don't mean that it cannot happen or be a factor to the additional sales figures. Now, I'm not saying this article is not true or that Apple suck or whatever you appear to interpret out of my posts, all I am saying is that these charts and sales figures do not take EVERYTHING into account, which result in misleading figures. I'm not having a go at Apple, I'm not saying that the iPhone sucks... I'm getting one myself as you well know when I get the chance; I'm saying that articles like this cannot be taken to the letter.

And that aside, I still see a hell of lot more people using blackberrys than iPhones. You're sales figures and statistics cannot deny that.

That is funny, I see the complete opposite. I see more on iPhones and Androids then blackberries.
