I just called my local O2 store to ask about availability of the iPhone 3GS, and they told me all iPhone stock on pre-pay has been recalled company-wide. I called another random store to verify this, and they said this is true.

Also, I then called the Apple store in Leicester, UK, and they said that none of their iPhone stock has been recalled whatsoever.

It obviously isn't a quality or safety issue, as O2 still have contract iPhone stock, which they are continuing to sell. My initial thoughts were that maybe it was something to do with the January 27th event... but upon reflection, that just makes no sense.

I just wanted to throw this out there.

They don't have any contract phones either as I was looking at upgrading my sons for his birthday. I think it's gonna be yellow screen issues as there seems to be alot of them at the moment but I guess we will never know

So why are Apple not recalling any, and why are O2 not recalling contract stock then?. I see your point, but it makes no sense.

By the way, I would like to make it clear that the "yellow screen issues" you reference, are a very slight but noticeable (to some) yellowish tint to a number of iPhone 3GS'. The way you phrased it, makes the issue appear far more dramatic than is the reality.

I don't think there is actually any such thing as "contract stock" and "PAYG stock" - the iPhones are all exactly the same. It's just the type of account/SIM they are supplied with that is different. I expect this is simply down to O2 store policy and they have simply been told not to sell iPhones on PAYG if they have limited stock of iPhones (so that they can keep them back and sell them to more valuable contract customers).

Apple have no such nonsense going on so simply get it direct from them. You can order it online from their website so doesn't matter if you aren't near to an Apple store, and if you do order online then go via topcashback.co.uk and get 3.5% back off the purchase price from the apple.com store.

Back in December I was on the hunt for a payg 3Gs. At the third Carphone Warehouse I went to the guy cut the BS and told me they weren't allowed to sell any of their stock as PAYG, which was when I started trudging round O2 stores . . .

Carphone Warehouse and O2 both had crappy stock in December, dunno if it was just 'cause of Christmas but I'd just get one from Apple direct.

very true about the yellow screen I never mention it to sound like it was a mass effecting issue. Tho I can see o2 telling stores to push contract rather than payg as the profit margin is higher.

recalled prepay iphone handsets

i work as an o2 sales advisor in oxford street, and the reason they recalled the apple iphones on prepay is not because they are faulty, they are the same as the contract ones, we just sell a pay as you go simcard with them instead of contract sim cards, but stock needs to be adjusted in order to label them as pay and go handsets. We stopped selling them because they werent selling as much as we sell contracts so we can re-adjust stock so that we dont run out of contract ones as easy since they are in higher demand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So it's all about the bottom line then, just as I thought. Typical.

Oh well, your loss - Apple stores still sell them.

PS: Are all the exclamation marks really necessary?.
