iPhone Photo Deletion Crashing iPhone [Sync With Windows XP/SP3]

I'm sorry for being horribly dense on this one, but I've found some stuff on this online but they are extremely old (circa the original iPhone launch) and I just don't understand it and whether there is a current solution for this issue.

Basically, the issue is that deleting photos from my iPhone while it is connected to my Windows PC usually crashes the iPhone, causing it to reboot. Copying photos itself works fine, but if the copy process involves deleting the photos, then the iPhone crashes. This happens both with opening the iPhone from My Computer and if I try to have Picasa copy and delete the images.

The software involved is the current iTunes, iPhone firmware 2.2.1, the current Picasa, and Windows XP/SP3.

Is there a solution to this problem currently?

Apologies if these are silly questions, but:
1. Can you delete directly on the iPhone without it crashing?
2. Have you tried a restore on the phone?
3. Does it happen if you use Windows XP Scanner and Camera Wizard to do the same thing?

No, thank you for your suggestions.

1) No, it doesn't crash.

2) I haven't, although it happened with firmware 2.2 and also 2.2.1....

3) Yes, it does -- I apologize, I should have the error message available, but Windows seems to indicate that it's core process for communicating with cameras, whatever it's called, has crashed (sometimes, but not always, after the phone itself has crashed).

EDIT:

So here is one relatively recent thread on the issue -- that person upgraded to Vista apparently to solve the issue (which really isn't an appealing option to me). This thread (see last reply) indicates that individually deleting photos does work -- I think this is true for me also.

Are you able to email the photos? I know this would be far from a solution since it would take so long and you would probably be better off importing each photo individually but I'd like to know. I am assuming it's a communication failure between your PC an your iPhone. For some reason it's causing both to fail. It may also be a permissions problem where the iPhone doesn't allow Picasa to delete the original files.

Everything involving photos works perfectly except mass deleting them from the computer. It doesn't seem to be a permissions issue -- the iPhone seems to try sometimes, and it has occasionally succeeded.

It's odd that it seems to be not so uncommon, and yet there hasn't been any word of acknowledging it as a bug or fixing it. I had rather been hoping 2.2.1 would fix it....

I just gave it a try on mine, I'm on 2.2 and XP SP2. This was the first time since going to 2.2 I think. I used the XP scanner and camera wizard.

It did not crash, though it took a long long time to go through the delete stage after the photos had been transferred (over a minute for 5 photos and the phone was not responsive on its screen while it was happening).

So I guess it's not a universal bug, maybe it's one that's driver dependent. Sorry, don't know how to be any more help.
