iphone pice drop by x-mas '07?

I had a friend say that he heard or read that the iphone price is likely to drop to $299 and $399 respectively for the x-mas season. Has anyone heard this or think it is likely?

I am interested in purchasing, but am now holding off after hearing this news, or perhaps it is just a rumour.

For those who have purcahsed, is it worth the current price tag?

No way in hell would the iPhone drop $200 for Christmas season.
 
a better answer is when the hell has apple ever really done a price drop on one of it products. the ipod never really has had a price drop and I do not expect the iPhone ever to have one.

Doesn't make sense. Bad business and not Apples's style. They usually keep prices pretty constant while upgrading the hardware features. Is it worth the current price? For me it is worth much more. I am getting spoiled with the phone in my everyday business and personal use. I am convinced the day I die I will be clutching my iPhone v.x.1

Your friend is an idiot if he believed it. If you just need to make/receive phone calls, it's not worth it. If you like the idea of a handheld computer which gives you internet access on the run, plays music and videos, and takes great pics, then it's definitely worth it, and more. It's really an unbelievable piece of cutting edge technology.
 
I think this is probable but not during Christmas and not a $200 price drop. Lets not forget apple has to draw a fine line these days between their products. You can't have a video ipod priced the same as an iphone.

I expect that this supposed iphone nano will hit the shelves for the holiday season and then at Macworld in January Apple will announce a $100 price drop to both iphone models and simultaneously announce iphone V2 for a Spring 08 release, with $499 and $599 price points. Features and memory will be the big ?

Just my 2 cents.

Which was? IIRC approximately $100 on products that cost nearly $1K. Which would be... what, 10%? I find it extremely difficult to see a relatively new product without multiple "models" or without a true "line up" get a price drop of nearly 40%.
 
I heard that Apple was really interested in making this happen for Christmas, but all their engineers got pulled to get the headless iMac / midrange tower out in time for shoppers. :)

This is sarcasm people!

Before more people get confused, Apple is NOT releasing a headless iMac in the near future.

I saw that, but sarcasm has to make sense.
i.e. ".....make this happen for Christmas, but they need the extra profit to sink into r+d for the headless iMac / midrange tower.
Engineers don't influence price drops.
 
I say the odds are about as good as Apple releasing that elusive Powerb... G....

The 30" ACD used to cost $3299. it now costs $1799. That was a $1500 price drop, or nearly 50%. Apple itself cited in its last financial report that they incorrectly estimated the ridiculously cheap prices of NAND flash, leading to higher than expected profit margins on the iPhone. So a drop isn't necessarily out of the question.

Haha, all right, all right... the headless iMac is sort of a perennial topic in the vein of Apple making more "price competitive" products. Which I think will never be released. ;)

Anyway, for what it's worth, the vast majority of the time, when Apple reduces prices on products, they do it during a product refresh (they change the specs and the prices). If you look at the iPod in particular, the price steadily came down over time, pretty much each time a new generation was released (often in the form of the old "high end" model being supplanted by a new "low end" model that has a similar price to the old low model but slightly better features than the old high model).

So in that sense, actually, yes, engineering is usually involved when Apple drops prices. I think the same will happen at some point with the iPhone, as the result, also, of new versions that raise the feature bar and lower the price.

I don't see it happening for Christmas shopping.

That is a good point. That may be a path for a price reduction, as would weak sales. Remember as well that this is the only product that Apple receives a royalty on every month.
That does make pricing predictions extremely volatile!
 
Yeah...I wasn't really sure, so thought I would see if anyone heard anything here. My friend is an external IT guy who deals with Apple so is supposedly somewhat in the "know". I am pretty sure he was eluding to an after December 25th price drop, as in last week of december and then into the first quater of '08 (january).

I told him I was thinking of getting one and he said I might want to wait because he has heard or read that they may be reducing the price after the x-mas season. When I asked him by how much, he said it could be as much as $200 as there was a lot of speculation and rumours surrounding this price for the inital launch in june. He said that there has been a lack luster in sales due to the price, but I am from Toronto so he could be referring to the Canadian market...not sure.

I know this article and many others like it are dated before the launch but this could be playing a part in the rumour mill and how he got the idea of a $200 price drop.
