I was wondering... I know that I will encounter situations where I would rather take a crappy phone with me than my iPhone. I do not have an iPhone yet, I plan to get one in early August. I also do not have a contract with AT&T yet.

So, I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to get the basic 40/month with a free phone from AT&T, sign the contract, receive the phone, THEN buy an iPhone, transfer the number to the iPhone and activate it by adding the 20/month that makes it an iPhone.

This way, I would have a free, junker phone that I could put my SIM card in? I'm coming from Verizon and I've never used SIMS so would it have my contacts on it and work with my same number if I put it in the junker phone?

I'm thinking this would be a great way to get a free GSM phone seeing as how Verizon phones are CDMA and would never work with AT&T anyhow.

So, will this work?

EDIT: I understand that I will be paying two activation fees instead of just one, but I think 36 dollars is worth it to have an entirely other brand new phone that isn't so precious ;)

This works, there are other threads about it, do a search, there is one called 200 of an iphone.

It is totally legal to do. You will only pay on activation fee, because it is for your account and not the phone, once you get your iphone that is the sim card you will use and the other one will become inactive. Just make sure you read what you need to do do get a rebate.

I was shot down by the ATT guys when I asked about this, however, this was like five days before iPhone went on sale so they didn’t know a lot of information. Basically I wanted to sign up and get a free cheap phone and then upgrade to the iPhone just a few days later but the manager at my store said I might run into problems since the iPhone was going to need a new two year contract. Guess I just got screwed for being a first in line type of person. Oh well, I just had to have it right away.

i was just thinking about this earlier, but i already got my iphone. i wish i could've think of it before i bought the iphone.

It works. You can get the best deals from Amazon, like $450 off the phone. Maybe just sell it as a new phone after you hook up the iphone.

ALSO: You will not have to pay activation fees for the iPhone, only for the ATT phone.
