iPhone powers off with over 20% battery

As the title states my iPhone 6s would randomly power off when the battery is reporting anywhere between 20 and 40%. If I press the power button I'd get the icon indicating drained battery. If I plug in a power source the phone turns on and still shows 20%+ of battery. If I unplug after a few minutes it'll turn off again.

Took it to an Apple Store and they said the battery is fine and that I need to do a clean install (as I've already attempted a full install/restore). Kinda find this ridiculous to be an acceptable solution. I'd lose all my app settings, text messages, and HealthKit data.

Anyone experience an issue where the phone would always power off when it shows over 20% battery?

Nope, been averaging 80 degrees F here and phone hasn't been in any extreme temp situations. The Apple tech said that he saw logs of a lot of app crashes (though wouldn't tell/show me what 'a lot' is). And I don't see how that would turn the phone off at 20%.

likely either something is wrong with the battery or something is wrong with the install. have you tried backing up and restoring the phone? that way you can get a fresh install of everything. if you still have problems after that, probably the battery.

That's what I did (clean install and then restore from iTunes of a previous backup). Tech says that won't help and I need to do a clean install and just stick with that. Ridiculous to expect end users to just lose all their text messages, activity data, and app settings. I've been upgrading my iPhones yearly since the original and don't recall when the last time I started from a clean install without restoring. This is YEARS of data that they just expect me to forget about.

does seem like a terrible option. you keep mentioning a tech, is that an Apple employee? I would keep pushing or try starting the support request over. clearly you need more information from them.

maybe delete all the apps before the archive and restore? then you can download the apps fresh after the restore. anything you bought previously, you can download again. except maybe for those that are no longer available.

and ultimately, the battery could still be bad.

This happens to me too around the 30% mark on my iPhone 6, iOS 9.3.2. It'll turn off and show the plug in to charge sign, then when I do, it turns on and has the same amount of battery it had when it switched off.

Same thing happens to my girlfriends iPhone 6S we bought on launch. It has been returned to the shop a few days ago and they will send it to their repair shop for a check and an eventual swap. Fingers crossed.

Yes, it was an Apple tech at an Apple Store. I was able to persuade him to swap out the phone and I did a full restore (from an iTunes encrypted backup). Have been able to run the battery down to 1% without issue a couple times already. Obviously it was a hardware defect, very frustrating that they would even consider telling a customer to just start from scratch.

Even if they do a check and it says the battery is good (mine showed 97% capacity after about 200cycles) urge them to replace it.
