Here in my country in Europe if you buy your phone via phone carriers the delivery dates for Silver iphones is long.
Silver pro and max both have an estimation of 4-6 weeks delivery time regardless of storage 256gb vs 512gb (2T on pro max excluded).
While the other colours orange and blue has shorter delivery estimation of like 2-3 weeks. (Usually it won't take 4-6 weeks in the end and be sooner depending on stock.)

Is this normal, does this happen during releases of new iphones? Does Apple maybe have production problems with the silver frames?
Or is silver maybe most popular colour? Both? Or did Apple maybe think people would go more for the blue and orange? 🤔

It's not uncommon for there to be shortages of certain models after pre-order and in the weeks after release day, it happens every year.
I would guess silver has been a more popular option this year as a neutral color option for those who don't like Orange or Blue and they may have factored in more people wanting the new Orange color so got a larger inventory of them so that's why the delays are less but silver may have had more demand than expected.

Once release day has passed Apple works fast to try and ship people their phones as quick as possible and many will likely see those 4-6 weeks moved up.

I was thinking the same thing... Apple probably made more orange phones. I wanted silver, but chose blue because of stock. I've seen the blue phone be a fingerprint magnet!

Yes might be. They might have thought orange would be more popular however to me thats surpricing if they really thought that. Orange is really an acquired taste. Surely they are experienced enough to know the neutral light colours along with black is in majority taste wise for most people? How can they be a billion dollar company if they can't predict something this simple right?

Maybe they for some reason wanted to "nudge" people to get the orange, mainly the people who can't wait and has to have their new order in their hands yesterday would maybe go for that option if they were decident between orange and other colour.

Buts its all speculations. Still interesting

You were too impatient to wait a little bit longer? 😅

The stock they have for new colors is always higher because they know that many people will go for something newest/exclusive to just to show it off. They predicted the colors and demand fine but its always better to undershoot your initial order stock and have a backlog of a few weeks than have a excess stock they can't sell just taking up warehouse space, it happens every year so nothing new or unexpected and those dates will more up quick.

In an interview when asked about the lack of a black, they said that the colors were chosen to appeal to everyone with the silver and blue being the neutral colors and the orange being the 'hot' new color for those who want to be adventurous or outgoing.

Every release. It's inevitable. The choice is either to build out a supply chain fat enough to deal with first day/week order demand of a new device with no delays -- and then have excess capacity sitting around unused the rest of the year which is wasteful, drains money, etc .. or, strike as much of a balance as you can to keep first day/week order times not too bad while not having unused manufacturing capacity the rest of the year.

I'm always sitting at my computer 15 minutes before pre-orders go live to make sure I get what I want on delivery day (hence, my wife and I are getting our Silver ProMax phones delivered this Friday).

In New York and San Francisco, it's the same situation: silver can't be ordered, but blue and orange can still be ordered for pickup this Friday or Saturday.

Thank you! Yes I just recently read about Cooks preferences and tactics, how they try to not have excess atock and tries to keep it balanced. Still thats why I am confused they seem to not have been able to foresee the demand for the silver or they have some problems. Yeah most of us here pre-orders via carriers and as said they have long waiting for the silver but Apple store has longer waits for it too so those are the reasons that prompted my post. Yes I am sure it will all be sorted out when the order starts to get out albeit silver probably will take longer

Apple didn’t make a mistake, rather it is a deliberate strategy of producing more orange units during the first wave even if they know silver is more popular. This demand shaping strategy is used in other industries to make customers walking billboards and generate more hype.

The “hero color” this year is orange, hence more assembly lines are dedicated to orange relative to expected demand.

When a customer like you has made the decision to buy a Pro Max, your decision is not between “wait” or “not wait.” Rather, it’s wait how long. You are more likely to choose orange if the wait is 2-3 weeks only.

Oh no! 😓 It will be very interesting to see how it all will develope after release day😅

Same in Australia

Silver seems to be the most popular colour for the pro and max followed by the orange

Yes these are the angles I thought about too. Them making a mistake in predicting the popular colour seems not that likely. So as said they maybe are trying to nudge people to buy the orange bc as you explain it, it will be a walking billboard indeed😅

Its nagging me a bit how we at the end of the day are mostly speculating and probably never will know for sure, right? 😅

Thank you for the reply! Its so interesting to hear how it is in other countries around the world!

I waited to order mine on purpose since we will be out of town this weekend for our daughters wedding. I just placed order from Verizon for 256gb Silver Pro Max, and is saying delivery by Oct 17. Oh well, I'm coming from a 14 Purple Pro Max 256gb, which is still doing ok.

Sounds like people avoiding the orange and dark blue.
For me, it's more that I prefer the more neutral colors. I almost always go for whatever the black option is for the Pro Max ... no black this year, so silver became the de facto replacement.

Constantly checking the Apple Store app multiple times a day to order a silver iPhone 256 GB for pickup, but still coming up short. It seems if I choose the orange or blue phone for local pickup, I have no issue.

Based on past years, we should start seeing inventory for pickup starting Saturday. Definitely next week.

Yes, I'm going to a concert on September 26 and I wanted to try out the cameras at that concert. haha
I totally understand that! I feel the same about an upcoming travel and wanting to have the new phone with me as I take many pictures and vidoes with my phone, even though I have a normal camera too😅. Hope you will like your new phone!

Thank you! I buy new phones every 4-5 years so I seem to have zero clue about all this😅. My first all new release phone the X was delayed world over bc of Oled screen problems. My second all new 13 I bought months after release so I had no clue about Apples strategies, now I know!😊
