can you take the SIM out of the iphone and put it in another phone on the cingular network, i wouldnt want to bring the iphone to a party and risk something being spilled on it. Also can you text/ use the keyboard in the landscape orientation?

SIM card switch....mmmmm, Im not sure, normally I would guess yes, but since cingular and apple are in such a complicated relationship, anything related to both parties make me feel unsafe to predict.

It hadn't occurred to me that breaking or wear and tear would be a major problem for an Apple product -- I have to agree, I would be surprised if it were that fragile.

its just human natural to want to find every possible ways to protect a new stuff he got. especially when the gadget really looks nice or delicate or expensive. With time goes by, ppl will ease up.
What kind of pictures does it take? If I get an iPhone (I already have Cingular so, whatevs) I'd want it to do absolutely everything for my money. Phone, camera, iPod, Internet...but on the other hand, could you imagine having this thing stolen??? Just to have one would require you to padlock it to your belt. Everyone is going to want it. And they better be making some waterproof covers.
I don't think the SIm card is user accessible. I'm fairly sure that the phone is sealed. No card slots, no access to the battery. On the typing thing, not sure but I imagine it might, not sure why that is quite necessary.

If this is news to you, where have you been.
a. sealing the SIM card will probably go to making it harder to unlock.
b. from what I heard when it was first announced, one of the complaints was the lack of a replacable battery so that users could either carry a spare or get a bigger one/longer charge. However that would have made the phone thicker, something Apple didn't want to do. The sealed it so that a larger, width x height battery could be used, but one that is also thinner, giving them the battery life they wanted and the form factor.

Maybe it does. That would make sense. But from what I remember seeing, I didn't see any slots. Then again, I haven't held one.
In the keynote, Steve says this while showing the top view of iPhone:
"It has a slot for your SIM card."
Of course, that doesn't mean it's user-accessible.
This will turn off some potential buyers, but in the end, it probably won't hurt the sales any more than the refusal to buy an iPod by those who expect it to have a user-replaceable battery.
I've had different cell phones for seven years and the only time I've ever opened any of them was to remove and replace the battery on my stupid RAZR to stop it from turning off on its own. Your experience may be different, but I think it's quite possible that the average cellphone owner doesn't give a hoot about messing with their SIM card.
As for battery life, since it seems that it will be possible to charge an iPhone using any iPod charger, many future iPhone owners already own a car charger, extra wall charger, a computer they could charge from, etc. I don't think I've ever run out of power on any of my iPods (other than my 4-year old one whose battery life is about 30 minutes now).
