I was thinking the exact same thing!!!! they have been very quiet about the iPhone coming to Canada. I think it was on purpose for sure and now i have a feeling they will come to canada a lot soon than we thought!

He's found more evidence if you go to the next page on the forum.... the presence of an iPhone promotional picture on the CA site and US site, but not anywhere else!!

I don't think the iPhone is coming to Canada. Not unless there is competition from other Canadian GSM carrirers... ouch! there isn't any!!!

Rogers would have to make major changes to their data pricing before Apple would consider selling it in Canada and I don't see Rogers dropping their $20.00 for 1 MB rate to $20.00 for unlimited data any time soon.

I really wonder that the Canadian government has let this fly. Those graphs of what data costs in Canada as opposed to other countries in the world are really remarkable. You ought to get your MPs to pressure Rogers.

The thing is not as simple as bringing the phone to a Canadian company. They also gotta have something similar like the Edge for internet and visual voice messages etc.....

The problem is our equivalent of the FCC. They've forbidden foreign ownership of Canadian telecoms.

The three telecoms we have have been *increasing* their prices for 4 years. It's a bold-faced Oligopoly and our government allows it to persist. I guess that any group of people who pay 50%-60% income taxes just takes it for granted that they're going to get hosed by their government -- and won't be able to do anything about it.

They do have a country-wide EDGE infrastructure. It may or may not be able to handle the load of all those high-bandwidth iPhones, but that's just a matter of upgrading.

The reason that the iPhone (1.0) will never come to Canada is that the Oligopoly will never allow unlimited data. They much prefer $25 for 4MB per month and $375/GB! It is far more profitable than $n for Unlimited.

If, however, the CRTC allowed foreign companies to bid on Canadian spectrum... the story would change. There would be real competition in Canada, prices would be cut in half, and mobile service would actually become commoditized like it has in the rest of the world!

An oligopoly is not illegal in the US or by common international law. A Collusive oligopoly however is and your right as it seems this is what you're implying. I have no doubt they are collectively agreeing to set price at some level

Thats how internet is in many European countrys also. Not only cellphones but home usage also.
If they bring it up North they'd probably charge and arm and a leg for Web use, people would be hunting for Wifi left and right

Argh! Getting my hopes up again! I constantly search for anything that has iPhone and Canada in the same sentence Seriously, I think it would be cheaper for me to get an iPhone in the states (since I have a credit card there) and roam in Canada than to pay the rates they charge here for data.

haha I feel the same, I'm always looking for Canada/iPhone links. Contrary to some people, I'm taking the optimistic route - I think (and hope) the iPhone will arrive in Canada in September and Rogers will surprise us by offering unlimited data at a reasonable price. Why do I think this? Because I know Apple put a lot of pressure on Rogers to offer unlimited data because they know the iPhone needs unlimited data. Keep in mind Rogers and Apple have been in discussions since January or possibly earlier.

Fido (GSM provider) used to operate in the Vancouver area and offered a $50/month flat-fee based data package.

It was the best priced package on the market, enter Roger's, buys out Fido and I don't think the package is available any longer. May give you some idea of the price of a future unlimited data package though.

Yup, I remember when that Fido plan just disappeared. When you're the big three, buy out the little guy and advertise your "amazing" email plans where you can spend $100 a month for like 25mb of email and that's it. Sounds efficient... My girlfriend's dad buys an expensive Treo and what's the point when all he can do is use it as a phone, there's no point in any data at all.

Oh the memories. I used to be happy to pay 80$ a month for 5mb data on a Roger's Blackberry -- and 1$ a min for voice!

I hope for Canadians its not the case this time, but many companies (including Apple) run their Canadian sites as minimal modificons (almost skins) applied to the US site.

If you spend a lot of time going back and forth between the two, you can get one or the other of the two Apple sites to show pages obviously only for one country on the other country's site. Manually entering some urls used to be able to pull up music store pages on the Canadian site long before a Canadian music store. It was just displaying the US pages.

Every once in awhile, depending how you navigate to that page, the Canadian site has a brain fart and lists US retail stores and only US retail stores.

The French Canadian site sometimes barfs pages intended for other French sites.
