iPhone Restoration Help! Need help ASAP

i need to restore my iphone but when i do that through iTunes it wants to restore it ANd update it with the 2.0 update.. how can i make it JUST restore?

shift-restore on a PC
option-restore on a Mac.

That'll give you the option to use the ipsw that you want.

when i restore the iPhone it says theres an error.. is that normal?

i read somewhere that an error message was normal, but i'm not sure if it was applicable to restoring it, or if it was for something else...

also, when i try to jailbreak it, it doesn't pick up an iPhone connection.. even though itunes does.. any ideas?
