I read somewhere here that you have to keep them under 30 seconds long for them to work, not sure if it's always the case but that was the problem some people were having.

i can comment on version 1.1.1 and 1.1.3 as i have both.

on the 1.1.1 i use sendsong and get it to assign the custom ringtone.

on 1.1.3 i just SSH into my phone and place the m4r files into /LIBRARY/RINGTONE and that way works for me.

you can alternative use itunes to import the ringtones but that method has been a hit and miss for me though

Thanks for the info. I just verified it also works for 1.1.4.

Keep in mind, you are copying your ringtones to smaller partition (not the partition where your music and videos are stored, which is a lot bigger) so in theory you can eventually run out of space. Use BossTools to move your default ringtones directory to the bigger partition if you wish ("/Library/Ringtones" will link to "/var/Ringtones" after using BossTools).

You also have to make sure that they have the m4r extension. The iPhone won't play other file types.

I use iToner to do that which does the conversion for you.
