IPhone safari- does it really need flash?

When I first got my iPod touch, I remember thinking that it would be annoying browsing the web because it's web browser did not support flash.

However, I have to say, I think lack of flash support is an excellent idea. The reason? Ads! I hate flash ads, they're distracting, chew up precious Internet downloads, and it seems video flash ads are becoming ever more common.

Plus, having a YouTube app means I am still able to watch I Internet video.
So really , appart from the odd flash-only website, I see no downside to apple continuing to leave out flash support in iPhone os safari.

Seeing as I wasn't asking a question, rather, posted some personal impressions after owning a touch for a little over 2 weeks, I felt rather than dig up an old (old) topic, I would instead simply create new one. Although I do thank you sir, for your input.

As much as I hate Flash, I'd like to see Flash player added just to shut the haters up.

I can avoid the Flash sites on my own. I do with my computer browser.
 
Last Missing Feature

I am continuously frustrated by the vast number of web sites that are completely useless without having Flash to view them. I would actually be willing to paying for flash on the iphone it was available. To me, Flash is the last major missing feature that would make me completely satisfied with my iphone.

I don't know if I'd pay for Flash, but I agree that it's frustrating not having it.

EDIT: On second thought, yeah, I guess I would pay for it.
 
There are very few, if any sites that I go to on my iPhone that require flash. I would never pay for it.
 
Flash is the gateway to porn. AT&T's fear for its fragile network is the real reason Flash hasn't come to the iPhone. Anyone whose hotel WiFi network has slowed to an agonizing crawl in the evening hours knows the phenomenon. And just think: you can hold your iPhone with one hand.

ROTFLMAO! Maybe Adobe should put that in their marketing materials.

"Download the latest Flash player here. It's the gateway to porn!!"
 
Indeed, other than YouTube (which has an app) and Hulu (which *really* needs an app!) the only thing I use Flash for is porn.

So the above poster speaks the truth.
 
Hey guys, don't forget there's a world out there beyond the borders of the US of A and AT&T - the lack of Flash means that here in the UK we can't use the BBC iPLayer to watch live TV on our iPhones or iPods, although interestingly enough the catch up TV service works just fine.
 
First off I HATE flash. I have it disabled on my laptops and find them much more stable as a result, but the fact is web designers do use it and require it for many sites.

I would rather not have any flash then be subjected to flash ads, cookie tracking and performance drain. I don't want to see live flash on websites displayed in Safari, but it would be useful if Safari handled content in the manner it currently handles embedded videos. Just show a block with a flash icon and if I click it, shell out to a dedicated flash application. (While a bit less convenient then just having Flash in the browser, this method conserves the phone limited resources and allows for a "snappier" browser)

Unfortunately I believe that Apples concern is that a Flash player application would undermine the App Store by allowing the creation of content rich applications without their approval. (Apples biggest fault is there own fear of competition)

A web designer could embed MP4 videos instead of Flash and then they would work on the iPhone today, the problem is that Flash is easier for them to code and provides a level of DRM. Since most platforms support Flash anyway, they just don't spend the time to make it work with MP4.

i have to say from my perspective as a user,
Flash is entirely, completely, utterly
bad.

Slow, inefficient, poorly supported, unreliable, buggy, inconsistent GUI...

If Flash were to disappear beneath the burgeoning HTML5 I think the web would be a better place.
 
Accessibility is the key

Not interested in being able to view flash videos, but some of the websites I visit regularly have flash-based menus and it frustrates me that I have to lug out my lap just to go onto one website.
 
If Hulu and Farmville ( :rolleyes: it's an addiction...) made apps for the iPhone, I wouldn't even be thinking about wanting Flash on my iPhone.
 
The last thing I need or want on the iPhone is flashed based advertising. What we need is an SafariBlock plugin for the iPhone that works without jailbreaking.

That would be nice.
 
Not a fan of flash, however I need a flash player for my daily use, I cant access so much content thanks to my iphone, i need to wait till i get to my PC.

You kill off a format when the industry has moved on to something new, not while its still in wide use and a standard.
Until HTML5 comes about and is in full swing, Flash will be around.
