Today I found a crack on the screen of my iPhone 3G. I'll admit it, I've dropped it before, but when i found this crack it had been an hour or so after a very mild drop. On friday I'm taking it to Chicago to the genius bar. What are the chances that they'll fix or replace it for free? Everything on the phone still works just fine.

If it is still under warrantee then they should replace it no problem. If not then I don't think they will do anything

Cracked screens are not covered by the warranty.

The chances are slim to none that they will fix it or replace it for free.

They will charge you $199 for a screen replacement.

But doesn't a completely new phone cost $200?

No. $200 is the price for a subsidized iPhone. The replacement price is $499-699, (depending on which iPhone) which is the full retail price of the iPhone.

With the rebates if you start a new plan my iPhone would be $99. It would be cheaper to get cancelled on my parents phone and start a new one with my phone. So why would a screen repair cost $200?

Because a screen repair costs $200.

If you start a new plan, you are paying $99 down, and $xx per month for 2 years until the iPhone is paid off. The total price of the 8 GB iPhone is $399 I believe. You pay for the $300 over the 2 years of the contract.

When I got my iPhone 3G it cost $400...but had a $200 rebate. The 3GS is out now, and the price for the 3G has dropped. I paid $200 for the phone, nothing more except for the monthly data plan, calls, texting, etc.

The subsidy is built into the $30/month data plan cost.

Why do you think that they don't let people upgrade early? So that they can make the money back for the cost of the iPhone.

When I talked to the lady at apple, she said that there's a chance that they might repair it for free or replace my phone, was she just lying?

She probably wasn't lying, she was probably trying to be nice (and to get you to not yell at her). She has no power over what they will decide at the store.

So I do have a hope? I honestly can't afford a $200 repair, and I don't trust myself to repair it. Will the crack in the screen eventually cause the phone to stop working all together?

Don't get your hopes up.

And you should be able to continue using it. Where is the crack? Post a pic of it if you'd like.

I've seen many people using cracked screen iPhones.

The crack is a diagonal in the middle and reaches from side to side. I'm still going to give the genius bar a try, but if it doesn't work out for me I'll try and see if my sister's boyfriend who works for At&T can help me. If not, I guess I'm just going to have to live with a cracked screen. Thank you for answering my inexhaustible questions.

Put a screen protector on your screen so it covers the crack.

No worries.
