Dear Apple Nerd,

I am looking for a way to be alerted via text message or email of my bank account balance WITHOUT having to log into an application. I would prefer to be forced to read the message, such as balance of account in email subject line, or perhaps a text message.

I do own a MacBook Pro, however I'm not sure if that will help the situation?

My bank has a text balance feature that allows me to text the special number with the code "BAL" and it will respond with my checking account balance. Is there any way to possibly set this up to run everyday?

My problem is, just like getting on the scale, I don't want to know how much money I have spent or pounds I have gained. Sure I could man up, but it's much easier to be forced to man up. Imagine getting out of bed, heading to the shower and the shower says, "Good morning Mr. JibJab, you are 342lbs today, looks like you're packing on the pounds".

I'd like a similar arrangement for my bank.

Any suggestions?

So you'd essentially look for something that is an automated text message sending application, something that can be scheduled to send out a specific text to a specific place, at any time you wish?

It could be done fairly easily if the bank accepts email, but I was looking recently and couldn't find a scriptable way to send a true SMS other than using email to send to a SMS address like "[number]@txt.att.com". That would show up as an SMS on an ATT phone, but I assume the bank uses a 5 digit number. I don't know if it's possible to send email to that, and it wouldn't have your phone number anyway so the bank would probably trash it.

if your Macbook is always running, you can probably use curl or wget in a script to get your balance and send it to your email/SMS.

I operate my Macbook at least once a day, otherwise it is in sleep mode.

Is there a way to say, "When the computer opens or is awaken, run this script if this is the first time today this computer has opened?"
