Ok I am going to attempt to keep this as simple as i can.

I have a 2016 iphone SE that was given to me by my dad.
Late 2019 my stepson was having some sort of issue getting his phone to connect to his new carrier. since I wasn't using the iphone my wife talked me into loaning it to him so he could get his new phone service activated. I thought he was using it since he didnt return it or mention it for a few weeks. I finally asked and he said he got his original phone working and didn't need the SE. Well I was going to try and use it and I couldn't log in under my passcode, then I asked him his and every permutation of it. He claims he never set one, but mine absolutely do not work, and the ones he gave me didn't either

I stuck the phone in my dresser drawer and put off trying to wipe it and hopefully prevent it from becoming a brick until today.

However, my macbook is 12 years old, and I am only on osx 10.9.5 , and Itunes which is version 12.2.0145 could not locate the correct IOS to restore the phone.

I know I am using ancient hardware with outdated software. I am not even sure I could get it upgraded, to a more current operating system, or if it would still work if I did, as it has moved pretty slow for quite some time now, but it is still working.

After my attempt to fix the phone when I unplugged it and it had an additional 15 minutes before it would even allow me to attempt to turn it on, even though I made no attempt to put in a new passcode.

What are my options to not totally brick this phone?

I assume my stepson started setting it up and was not paying enough attention and began the set up process but never even got his email sent in to apple as it keeps asking for it, even though I had attempted to locate an apple account under both email addresses he gave me.

Do I need to try and find someone that has a newer computer? And does it have to be a Mac, or will a PC work as long as I log into itunes?

OR should I attempt to take it to an apple store, or will they even offer to help?

I have also seen some sort of "service" offered to unlock the phone, but Iam a bit concerned about paying money only to have the phone bricked anyway.

I just want to be careful especially since it accidentally burned my last chance to make a mistake.
