Iphone SE 2020: Can't get it to check for & alert me to new emails

I think I set it up correctly but it actually beeps me that there's a new one ONLY when I specifically get into Mail, at which point I can SEE that there's a new one so the beep is redundant! I want to be able to be walking down the street whistling a happy tune when I suddenly -- hark! -- I hear a beep. Oh! A new email!

Like my old Iphone did. Thanks for any help!

Check your push/pull settings. Make sure mail notifications are allowed. Check/verify sound assigned to new mail. Check background refresh settings.
