Went to our local Apple Store in Rockaway NJ to upgrade my wife's 5S to an SE Rose Gold 64 GB. No dice. Not available. Checked the online Apple Store and all the NYC stores are showing also NA. Any idea what the hangup is? Is it simply that popular that demand is stripping supply? We're not rushed so it isn't a major disruption but I'd like to take advantage of the trade in option which can only be done in person at a Store.

I don't know if it helps you in any way but here in Germany there are no supply problems, neither online nor in store, just checked.

The Apple Store
These new phones are quite popular, possibly because of the price coupled with the pent up 4" phone demand. Around me, nearly every model other than the T-Mobile 64 GB Space Gray is sold out for 2-3 weeks.

I just checked the 64GB silver SIM-free model a few days ago, and every Apple Store that showed up on the list had them in stock. Figured Apple finally caught up with demand.

There was not a short supply here. I purchased mine at my local Apple Store shortly after it came out.

Well the short supply started happening like a month after launch. That's not saying that they're not available somewhere...

BS, the supply situation in Germany varies day by day; some stores have them available in one month ! Apple stores just reduced the waiting time from three weeks to days but inventory in Apple shops is still changing and disappearing...Berlin store again has no inventory left for 64GB

Have the phone shipped to the nearest store and sign up for the trade-in then.

Why check constantly for availability and maybe be disappointed.

I picked up 2 last week from the freehold New Jersey store. They had limited stock on the Verizon 64gb but I got a unlocked sim free 64gb. They had a lot of them.

I'm sure it depends on the area where you live. I just checked all the stores near me for 64GB SIM Free in space gray, and pretty much every store near my zip code has them available.

Here in Tampa, Florida, my fiancé and I walked into a store and purchased both a white and black unlocked 64GB SE, so it probably all depends on where you are and what capacity/color combination you're looking for. The sales girl did mention that they were tight or out of pretty much every other color/capacity combination, so there's that.
