My old SE battery is beginning to weaken, going flat by the evening most days. I have followed the Apple guidelines to help this issue but doesn't help. I also turn the phone off every night to reset it.
Apart from replacing the battery, are there any things I can check before doing this?

Have you looked at battery health on settings?

My maximum battery capacity is down to 87% which isn't surprising for a 4½ year old LiPo. I have the "Optimised battery charging" ON. Right now it is showing 127% charge left from 100% at 8:30 this morning. I have made no calls, have done a bit of WhatsApp and Sudoku. Other than that it's just benign my pocket. Bluetooth is OFF.

Actually you've done well as far as the battery is concerned for a 4 ½ year old phone. Especially since the battery in the original SE is rather small. Not sure what the cost is in the UK to change out the battery for a new one, but here in the US it's $49 (if you can find an Apple Store open and one that will accept an appointment).

apple closed the CA apple stores just now 122020.

yes I made an appointment, went to a local apple mall store.

tramatical:
the mall was dripping covid.

apple changed out the battery, took 1.5hours and about $50.

I used Best Buy to change out a battery in a spare iPhone 7+ that I keep around just in case. Best Buy are authorized Apple repair service providers and did fine with changing the battery and charged me the same price as Apple, $49.

Having said that, I would not trust Best Buy to do any kind of major repairs. (unless you're desperate.)

Given the age of it it's not unusual for the battery not be doing so well.

When did you get your Iphone SE? I bought the IPhone SE about 4.5 years ago when it came out.

Then about two years later or so... battery got worn but apple had that promo where you paid thirty dollars or so plus tax to get replacement battery at apple store and I did that. My battery was very good for l.5 years or maybe a bit more longer than that. Now recently in the last few months or so... the battery is getting bad. The battery health is now 85%.

So you never had the battery replaced even once? That is pretty good. Are you in the US as well?
