Hi

I was under the understanding that a locked iPhone was secure, after all even the FBI can‘t get into them.

But then I see ”tools” advertised, such as Tenorshare, that can unlock and also instructions to remove iCloud lock too.

What gives, I thought these devices were pretty much 100% secure so if mine got stolen, it would be worthless to theives? Also, why doesn’t the FBI just unlock using these tools that anyone can buy/download?

Nothing is 100% secure. Security is man made and man can break it. Security is basically making yourself a hard target. Not impossible but hard. I doubt most thieves would be able to unlock an iPhone since they don't have big brother's help but the parts are still worth something. Just search eBay for stolen... I mean activation locked iPhones.

This kind of thing is why I actually want a port less phone. The data port is the easiest vector to attack.

If my phone is stollen, I really don't care if thieves resell it... what I DO care about is the security of my data on the device and my accounts. I'm more concerned about this giving access to my data for example before I get a chance to remote-wipe the device.

I call BS. For $50 it won't do anything if you're running anything over iOS 12 and running find my iPhone. This is right from the product page:

"iOS 11.4 and above are NOT supported if Find My iPhone is ON. And illegal removing for business purposes is prohibited.

If Find My iPhone is enabled and your version is from iOS 10.2 to iOS 11.3, the data will not be lost after using 4uKey.If the iOS version is below iOS 10.2, the data will be lost.

If Find My iPhone is off, all devices are supported.

Do NOT erase all contents and settings on device or restore iPhone with iTunes after Apple ID removal. Because the original Apple ID is necessary to activate your device after restarting, and you will not be able to remove the Apple ID through the software again"

Plus it only works with a 4 or 6 digit numeric password...

OK, so is the hole that Apple fixed a while ago then (where that was that black box with lightning cable that the FBI (?) had or was shown online.
So, nothing to worry about as long as not running old iOS versions.
