Ok, so we know the iphone nano is coming and it’ll be basically an ipod and a phone and that’s it...simple, small and very cool but what about the iphone Shuffle ?

How are they going to make that baby work ?

Here are my thoughts on how they could implement the most minimal phone ever created which because it’s a shuffle will have earbuds and a mic in the earbud line - now that opens the door to some interesting ideas the main one being ;

STILL NO SCREEN but One extra ‘toggling’ button called ‘phone/ipod’

So how is that going to work ?

Usual buttons control the ipod - click the additional ‘phone/ipod’ button’ and the same buttons now control your phone!

You basically set it all up in Itunes - itunes reads/converts your address book into ‘spoken names’ and downloads them into the ipod so when you select the name it is spoken in your ear. You then just press the ‘play’ button to call them and press play again to ‘hang up’ which is of course ‘announced’ in your ear with the words ‘call ended’.

You can ‘add’ a number to your phone ‘on the run’ by ‘texting’ your number with the words ‘passphrase’ + ‘number’ + ‘name’

What could be simpler?

Just curious how you "know" about the "iphone nano"?

I think it should be just like the shuffle now... you push call and it randomly dials a number for you.

mmh...I can see where your going with this but when you examine it I actually don't think so...

Given the design limitation of the shuffle being 'no screen' and 'transport buttons' then the calling application has to have certain limitations. Also bear in mind this is still an ipod shuffle so to simply reach down twitch through your calling playlists and select a number and press call is pretty simple and at least equivalent in simplicity to a stock mobile address book other than the screen is being replaced by an audible confirmation...

It will have a rotary wheel like that we use like the scroll wheel on the iPod and a tiny square screen that just shows the number in monochrome. Once you scroll to the number you want you press the center button and it will dial it for you.... once you dial ten numbers it will make the call.

You can't save any numbers or view any numbers.
You can't listen to any unprotected iTunes songs or other music
You can't talk for more than an hour since the battery is so small
You can't make any roaming calls
The only contract is with Cingular and they have to take your soul as a deposit
It will come with 256MB of storage and two colors, black and brown
You can only charge it through USB on your computer so you better get one

The other model that Apple was talking about was an iPhone Micro that you will place in your arse and clinch your butt cheeks to make a call. :D

Hey you could be onto something with the rotary dialer....In fact if they printed up the scroll wheel with the characters 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, ENT on it you could actually 'spin dial' the number like they used to on the old fashioned rotary manual telephones like they had in the 30's!and 40's! ( eer we still had them in the eighties in the uk - I don't know about the USA!!)!...You'd spin from the number 6 to the ENT and let go...it would know that was a number entery and that it was a 6!!The earbuds would confirm the last number audibly.

This one could work REALLY nicely on the iphone nano!!..cos that could actually display the number and allow a 'save' and dial....

i want to say iphone "shuffle" makes no sense because why do you want to shuffle though contacts. (understandable why you would call it a shuffle since it has no screen and your basing this claim off that iphone will have the same line of products as the ipod) apple is not that crazy about getting the iphone at a lower cost by taking features away. They want to revolutionize how phones work at first. it took apple 3 years to get the kinks out of the ipod and finally started to make smaller versions of the ipod(mini) and it took an additional year for the shuffle. and of course just like you are, your basing it off the ipod.

by making the iphone smaller it doesnt help with the cost(i say it wont cut cost down to $300)

The iPod part should be just as it is now and you switch a button like the hold on the top to make it the phone. If you want to call someone you say the name into the headphones/speakers like the ones that come with the iPhone or say the number, and it would be really cool IMO if you can text like that as well. I don't know when/if this would be possible or if it would work but IMO this is the only way to do it effectively.

since the iphone would be running osx it is capable of speech reconization(might take up more memory) but i doubt it will be good since you might be in a noisy place and unable to have your phone decipher what your saying.

anyway, on point ;

The shuffle makes perfect sense - it will be the ultimate iphone for joggers and people on the move who mostly just need to 'take' calls. As for cost your forgetting it will be only a screenless phone and a simple ipod. Don't see why it will cost any more than the current shuffle in two years time...

What Apple needs to 'leverage ( read : make possible) ' is a kind of sim forwarding to your shuffle phone for when your Iphone one is set to forward without having to remove the sim from your iphone one.

I actually, ( seriously), would want one as well as my iphone One - which let's face it is going to evolve into a portable super computer and become less and less 'a phone' as it becomes more and more of a portable 'computer' hub type thing. The second they integrate 'wireless screen sending' then desktop computing, as we know, it is over!!

BTW: That blue phone is awful - it looks like a kids toy or a bottle of shower gel.

I'm not sure if they'll make an iPhone shuffle. I know they're working on iPhone 2.0 already, but not positive on the nano yet.
