Hello all,
Hope you are doing well
I have two iPhones, an 8 and an original SE.
Now in winter time they shutdown and act weirdly .
Regarding the 8 we are talking about a 2 yr old device with 83% battery health, with temperatures between 3 and -3 always inside pockets.
I would like to ask you the following questions:
1) is this normal to the iPhones even when new?
2) if no, is it due to wear of the battery?
3) will a “rugged” cover help?

Thank you for your help

Crashing when cold is classic old battery symptom. Get a new battery and it won’t do that.
Also the specified ambient operating temperature range for using the iPhone 8 is:
32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)

A rugged cover won’t help it stay warm. You need to warm it up somehow.

Thanks a lot, pretty clear for me.
May be you can answer me another question, does cold damage the batteries?
Because i am not very keen on replacing a battery if it will be damaged very soon once I got out in the cold.
Thank you

Yes, Unfortunately, electronic gadgets, particularly those powered by lithium-ion batteries, are not suited for temperature extremes. And also Apple says that very cold temperatures "could cause the device to turn off".

You should definitely replace the battery. Two years is due for a replacement.

Cold temperatures don't damage the battery, but it temporarily reduces the battery capacity and increases internal resistance. Battery aging also permanently reduces battery capacity and increases internal resistance.

What this means is, when the iPhone battery is cold and old, it can't supply power quickly enough and the capacity is lower. Therefore, it shuts down unexpectedly.
