iPhone SIM LOCK

There is a guy who wants to sell an iPhone 3G to me, but he said that it's locked up from SIM LOCK (not the passlock code). He doesn't remember it and that's what I'm here to ask:

How can you get rid of the SIM LOCK? There isn't any warranties that come with it.

I also want to know what exactly is sim lock? Does that mean that it's locked for their sim card, but if I put mine, I could still use it?

Really curious and I'm really interested in buying, but I just wanted to make sure first.

Sim lock only implies that the sim is locked therefore if you put another sim into the phone it should work as long as it is a sim from the same service provider unless the phone is a factory unlock then you can put in a sim from any provider.

You made it a little better for me to understand, but mind me if I'm just asking what you've just answered.

I wanted to double check.

I have tmobile. What if I jailbreak and unlock the phone? Then will I be able to use it or does the circumstances still stand?

And there is no way of just turning if off, right? Even after they forgot the code?

it has the 2.2 firmware version.

I think you can use one of those turbo sim cards that sits in the sim slot with the Tmobile sim. I ended up buying an Italian iphone that is permanently unlock from Apple because they can't sell locked phones in Italy.
