iPhone Slingbox App..at college can't connect to Slingbox at home

Hey Guys,

So I decided to put down the 30 bucks to get the Sling iPhone App. Now I'm at college on campus (my slingbox is at home) and I can't connect to the Sling box at home.

Is it a problem with my college's network even though the slingbox is at my house? Or is the issue with my network at my house?

I can't get the regular software on my mac to work either. I had no problems when I was my local area network.

Any ideas whats going on?

Some schools block certain ports. If it's not working on your computer, then it might be a network issue than an iPhone issue.

You have to be on the same network (LAN) as your Slingbox.

It's the same concept with the Apple iPhone Remote: The iPhone has to be on the same wireless network to synchronize with iTunes.

As long as your Slingbox is on an entirely different LAN, you cannot access it from your current LAN.

I thought the entire point of Sling was to view your home TV on the go. If it requires you to be on the same network, doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of it?

Yup, he's wrong. You can view your Slingbox from just about any internet connection, not just your LAN.

So would the network issue be at college even though the SlingBox is on my home network and not my college?

I thought all the port stuff is just from my home and isn't it just regular data coming in at college?

The Sling Media website says "To watch TV away from home, your Slingbox needs to have Internet viewing set up." This would seem to me to imply that viewing over a WAN (Internet) is possible with the proper settings. I don't know anything about how to set it up, but I imagine the manual would explain how.

You'd have to setup internet viewing from home first before being able to access it from any network. To do this you have to run the setup wizard while you're on the same network as your slingbox.

This is exactly right. If you have already set up your slingbox for remote viewing and it still doesn't work from your campus, it's possible that your college is somehow blocking you. If that's the case, I'm not sure what you can do. You can always jb though and try slinging over 3G (assuming you have 3G at college of course) by using 3G unrestrictor. Speeds will likely not approach wifi speeds but at least it will work.

think about what you're saying. you can only watch sling when you're home? can you please tell me whats the point of watching it on your computer or a tiny screen when your tv is right there?

No, you can watch sling tv ANYWHERE in the world as long as you have an internet connection. and it is entirely different then using the iphone remote, its not even in the same ball park.

It's the campus firewall. There's no way around it unless it logs on the Internet with your screen name and password for the Internet there. I had to get permission for my sling and xbox at UTA.

Yes, I noticed the same thing at a local college.
I could sling on my laptop and iphone at a local starbucks but not thru the college wifi.

You can sling from anywhere in the world. You dont have to be on the same network.
