iPhone spelling..

My favourite aspect of the iPhone phenomenon - all the posts/pages now appearing with bad spelling!:p

I just received a newsletter from one of my hosting companies; and this is just the first paragraph!:

Hello happy ******** vjsrlnwrs! And welcome to the June 2007 iSsue of
the ******* newsletter...special iNdependence day edition! It's also
special iPhone edoton, because I'm writing this in an apple store on an
iPhone! iDon't know if you can tell or bot but this is my first time
thpunv on one.. And iMust say I'm prefer awesome ar if!!

I thought it was just a joke, but the typos were all over the entire email. Not exactly a ringing endorsement! :D
 
Horrible, and I do think it is a joke. I went into it expecting the same level of semi-usable auto-correct that the desktop has and so far it has been more accurate than I expected. It uses key location to help with the spell-checking and correction, which makes it a lot more reliable than people expect.

That's good to see!

...though how long did it take you to type that message so reliably?

I mostly typed it just to show how decent the auto-correct is. For someone who is obsessive about correcting things manually, it /would/ take awhile. Once you get used to the auto-correct, I would say it takes about the same time as it would on my old Dash (HTC Excalibur). Granted, the Excalibur would have taken a year and a day to load the reply page. :)

Your mileage will vary. I don't think everyone will get used to the touch keyboard, IMO, but it works for me. I did get someone asking me how I managed to type a semi-long SMS response so quickly to them.

EDIT: The thing that I think people wind up spending the most time on with the keyboard is learning to trust it. Apple really is right on this. Once you trust the keyboard, typing is faster, smoother, and you have to hit the backspace button a lot less often. Proper nouns and some less-known acronyms are troublesome at first, but as it learns the word, you can even get away with typing 'jeevmik' and it will correct it to 'Krevnik' for you when you hit space.

Have you molested an iPhone yourself, yet? I've spent a combined 10 minutes or so. The first time I spent maybe 5 minutes. I made a ton of typos. The second time, I only had about 1 minute to fiddle and I made a few typos. By the last time I tried typing, it was already a lot more natural feeling. Plus, I hadn't yet figured out the whole selecting the suggested word that pops up. :eek: So yeah, there is a learning curve but ultimately, it really is pretty simple to type properly.

Easy & fast text entry is crucial for the iPhone, especially in Europe where SMS is becoming more important than calling. The number of 'Posting form an iphone' type messages I'm seeing - while funny - was a little worrying.

I would bet that what you found was meant as a joke, but because the auto-correct can be overridden, and if you mis-type one word into another, it won't auto-correct... it doesn't solve all spelling problems like magic. It does do a decent job of overcoming the lack of tactile feedback.

Unfortunately, no chance yet here.

I've no expectations of being able to type quickly and accurately straight away. I'm quite happy to take time to practice and improve, but I'm a little worried about the reliance on the spelling-checker.

I tend to use a lot of slang in my emails & txts, and use other languages without switching the input language (which can be a tedious step for one or two words) which the spell checker can't help with. It's important that I can type accurately without the spell checker; or else the spell checker better be able to learn words pretty darn quick! ;)
 
I find myself making more typos on the computer now because I am used to iPhone correcting my spelling on the fly. :eek:
 
It would be a neat addition to add a PalmOS type Graffiti –( hand writing recognition system), worked great on the Palm pda’s,.. fast.
 
there's a great video on youtube where someone types "only an idiot can't type fast on this keyboard" in like 15,20 seconds. Definitely a must-see.
 
To become more trusting with the key board this is what I do every morning while having breakfast I open notes on my iphone and I write I put down everything thats on my mind then I erase it this has helped me so much.
 
i hate how it corrects some things repeatedly even though i don't want it to correct it. you would think if i actually type "lol" 50 times it would autosuggest "lol" instead of "LOL". it's also done some weird corrections i've never even thought about using.
 
I find myself typing faster on the iPhone because of the auto correct as I am a horrible speller and the iPhone corrects a lot of mistakes for me. Like this was typed on the iPhone with no mistakes, you really do have to trust the iPhone it works like a charm!

When you type a word that you want and it tries to overwrite it with something else, click on the word it wants to insert to close it out. Do it twice and it will add the word you were trying to type into the dictionary and no longer try to correct it for you.

So, instead of accepting LOL, tap on the little bubble that pops up to close it, next time type lol, do it again. After that it should no longer try to correct lol into LOL.
 
I played around with one yesterday and I made a lot of mistakes, but I did like the auto correct feature once I got used to it, and the keyboard is much nicer than the ones on most cell phones that i have used.
 
the autocorrect might be working nicely for English (of course!) - but I am typing in french sometimes and it corrects everything i write with engish words - so frustrating!

i've tapped the x bubble a few dozen times already, and it still prompts for "LOL" instead of "lol"...not sure :rolleyes:
