So my 1st gen iphone was stolen from my locker at the gym last week and I'm devastated. I've since resorted back to my old sony ericson and it's just the most basic phone ever. If i get the new iphone 3gs with 450min and data w/ 1500 text it will cost me roughly $74-80 with my 20% off.

My parents offered to put me on their verizon plan which would give me 400 min. unlimited text and data for only $40/month. Granted I would have to settle for an LG Vu or whatever they have that is good. I had my heart set on the Iphone because it syncs so well with all my mac products and it's by far the best phone but I like the idea of only paying half of what I pay now each month. I fig. I could get an Ipod touch with the camera and a GPS for my car and be almost as satisfied. I guess I'm trying to think smart instead of on impulse.

What do you guys think? If you did go with Verizon what is their best phone for text/internet/email?

In the UK things like that may be covered by your family house insurance depending on the level of protection you have. Its got too be worth a shot...

well it's not so much the actual cost of the phone ($200 since my contract was up anyways) but more so the extra $40 i'd be spending per month just for a cellphone.

well cant you just buy a new iphone for $200 and then get a new sim card and get your carrier to port your number and account onto that sim card. Thus you are only $200 out of pocket and paying what you had been??

if you weren't interested in getting a new phone get a BB Curve on VZ. they're giving them away

in the US any claim you make goes into the industry group CLUE database so if you make too many small claims then your rates go up

i was thinking Blackberry actually. would i be able to sync it with my itunes and what not? what about iphoto?

You can sync a BB to itunes using their Desktop Manager (I was a BB user for 7+ years).

As far as replacement, do you have home owners insurance? In some cases, they will pay for the replacement. Read your policy.

well as i said earlier the phone was the old version and the volume button was stuck. it was just a matter of time before i needed to update. my parents have been paying the $74 this last year of college but now that I've graduated I need to take on my cellphone bill. I'm wonder if using a Blackberry Curve on verizon (and buying the new ipod touch for music/entertainment/camera) would be smarter than buying just an iphone and having to pay an extra 30-40 a month.

$74-80 AT&T w/ Iphone
or
$40/month Verizon (on my families plan) w/ Blackberry

I guess they didn't teach you grammar/capitalization in college :p

Seriously, If the budget is your constraining factor, then the iPhone is not for you at the moment. I'd look at the Verizon plan with the BB but also consider one of the newer android phones and also the palm pre. I'm not sure what the costs are with those puppy's but I see sprint is always advertising the fact that they're much cheaper then AT&T and Verizon.

Ah, the irony....

OP-Could you do a pay as you go plan for the iPhone?

bumping is against forum rules also, I think you got enough responses. And if you think you haven't. Here is a tip or two.

1. If you have MobileMe, use the Find my iPhone feature. If you think everything is lost and won't see it back then, "Remote Wipe" If you didn't have 3.0 installed, and can't do either, kick yourself, someone has your information.

2. Contact the police if you want. Report the phone as stolen and give them the serial number (in case the phone is used to crime, you are safe).

3. Call up the gym and report.

4. Call up AT&T and see if they can help you track it via IMEI.

Has anyone here ever went to their home insurer and said, "I want to cover my iPhone"?

Or is it covered automatically? I would think that if your phone was lost or stolen, it wouldn't be covered unless it was stolen from your house.

I guess this all depends on the insurance company that your with. I'm trying to decide if I should get mine insured through my insurance company.

If you get the BB on Verizon, won't you still have to pay for the data plan? Wouldn't that negate any savings from the iPhone plan to the BB plan? I've never had Verizon, so I'm not real familiar with their plans.

Edit: I just realized the $40 would probably be the extra line and the data. My bad.

Mine was stolen too!

So I'm like 99% sure my cousin stole my iPhone. Long story short, she borrowed it and "lost it" two months later I told her I was taking her to small claims and surprise surprise here comes an iPhone in the mail. She said she was sending me a new one. It's not new, she keyed up the back screen( it had a cover when she borrowed it!) If it is mine she erased everything restored it and took my sim out. I got a new sim card, but the same phone number. The imei matches, but I want to give her the benefit of the doubt. Can imei match bc I hve a new duplicated sim card? Or should I quit trying to think she's a good person and honestly lost my phone. I'm not familiar with how the imei code works, but can u guys just reassure me that way I can know This is my phone and is there anyway of retreiving any of my info that was on here? I have it backed up on iTunes but from a long time ago and my charger just went out on my laptop! Eventually I'll do it. Thanks!!!!

How about just a lock on his locker?

I guess I'm trying to think smart instead of on impulse.
What I read here is mommy and daddy aren't paying my phone bill anymore and I don't want to pay to own an iPhone...
