iPhone stolen - what to do?

Had my iPhone stolen the other day at Minneapolis airport!

All I'm worried about is whether or not they can 'crack' the security code and access my data, how difficult would this be? iPhone is set to wipe after 10 attempts.

Was it connected to Exchange or MobileMe?
 
They won't be able to crack the passcode to get your information. But when they hit 10 attempts it will wipe the phone so your data will be gone. Or they would have to restore also wiping your data. Best option would be call at&t and report it lost or stolen. Then have them blacklist your IMEI so it cannot be activated. :)

I tried this...AT&T told me that they can't blacklist the IMEI. Maybe they lied to me, but I heard this several times from several reps.

That sucks, you could have remotely wiped with either of these. I pay $9/month for my own Exchange server. But of course, I'm an Exchange admin so I'm willing to do this. ;-)

Just so I'm not misleading...it's not $9/month for a dedicated server. It's $9/month for a hosted Exchange account. Sorry if I got you all excited.

But if you weren't expecting access to a dedicated server and just want a hosted Exchange account, I am very happy w/ the service. Here's the link:

Oh I wasnt being sarcastic. Sarcasm seems to be running rampant with all the hype of the leaked 4g phone. I was really interested and knew what you meant. Thanks for the link! :)
 
As long as the "after 10 attempt" wipe works well, and my data is secure, I'm not going to buy mobile me. I have always contemplated on buying mobile me.

But all it would give me is remote wipe, find my phone & sync bookmarks wireless.

Still those are three cool features.

I didn't know you could wipe with your own exchange server.... I might read up on that.


Every other mobile me feature I have found by different methods.

i've read AT&T won't blacklist IMEI's. too much legal hassle
 
I would feel safe with your four digit code. There are 10,000 possibilities it could be. So unless they get lucky, don't worry.

Couldn't you change your passwords for your email now so the iPhone has the old ones and they couldn't access them?

I would be content with the security wipe. Unless someone with quite a bit of knowledge found it (what are the odds?) they most likely will:

A. Turn it in
B. Sit there and try to crack it, therefore erasing the data
C. Figure out how to restore it so they can use it but your data will be gone then too.
