So my iphone was stolen about a week ago and I suspended the account a couple days ago. I dont plan on paying $300+ to get my 3gs back. I think I am just going to wait for the 4g to come out this summer.

I cant seem to find any 3g phones for under $150 so I plan on using a blackberry bold til the 4g comes out. I was wondering can I use a BB with the iphone plan? OR do I have to pay the ETF to switch the iphone plan to the BB plan?

I dont think the iphone data will work with a BB but give it a try.
All you gotta do is call AT&T and have them switch your data plan to a compatible one. You dont have to cancell anything or pay an ETF to do that.

One Word: MobileMe.

Anywho, have you thought of getting a family plan instead, get the iPhone at the subsidized price, then switch the numbers around to where the iPhone is the primary on the account? It would only raise your bill by $10/month.

Besides.. Techbargains is showing that they have the 8GB refurbished iPhone 3G out for $49.

But to be honest, things like this make spending the extra $99/year for MobileMe more than worth it. It only comes out to $8/month!

Explain what MobileMe gonna do when the thief removes simcard and restore the phone? Or what are you gonna do when you track down the phone and confront the thief?

Paying an additional $10 a month is not the brightest idea. Extend the contract of your account and you can get a replacement for $200 more, which is less than $10/month + misc fees x 12 months.

MobileMe. Give you a chance to wipe your data remotely.
Bring police officer with you if you can track it? I wouldn't go alone either.

Somehow I doubt the police would accompany you on a quest to recover an iPhone.

good thing we have the second amendment. i would certainly go on a quest to retrieve my iphone. i wouldnt want the cops slowing me down anyway. i can protect myself just fine.

This guy did. He got it back. Most people don't realize that you have to removed the sim card to prevent tracking. Just turning the phone off still allow you to track it.

Not all police will do that, especially in big city like NYC.

He's lucky that he lives in Denison, TX, where the population is smaller than the number of students that attend my university.

That's not neccesarily true:

You may need to do some of your own detective work, in somewhere like NYC, but the police will still help you if you provide them enough info. Always remember to file a police report initially though.

My hope for the next iPhone, with a rumored front-facing camera, is that you can log into MM and control the camera remotely on the iPhone to take a picture. The same can already be done with a Mac.

Mobile Me wouldnot have worked since the person turned off the phone.

Also if I add a new line does this mean I have to pay two ETF's when I want to get out of my contract this upcoming summer?

i never thought about adding a new line seems like a good idea since I already get 20% off my plan.

edit: didnt know having the phone off would still be traceable.

edit: just realized I will also have to pay $30 for data for the new plan. Extra $40 eh not really worth it.

You can still track the phone even when the phone is turned off.

You didn't mention the terms of your contract (not that you were obligated to), but if your 2 years are up then you should be eligible for upgrading NOW. So why not upgrade your phone now, with a new phone but a different sim card? Oh yeah.. you're wanting to see if a new iPhone is coming out.

In that case, you're screwed. suspend the account, don't get a phone, and wait until July.

The chance you take. Like I said.. when you break it down, MobileMe is more than well worth it. An extra $8.33/month versus $40 at the cheapest.

Yeah my contract is not even close to an upgrade.
