Why this still seems more difficult for Apple to accomplish is beyond me. If the phone doesn't finish syncing (gets unplugged, leave the house etc) the Mac will later refuse to shut down as Finder won't allow it to, saying it hasn't completed an operation with an iOS device. This occurs even after plugging the phone back into the Mac and hitting the "sync" button. The only way to complete the sync is by doing a manual reboot with the rear power button.

Even when I get it to backup and sync, Finder gives me a popup claiming it was unable to finish syncing with some strange reason (even though it is clearly backed up and synchronized).

It's just plain broken.

Yep. I've run into this a ton. Mine is stuck more often than not trying to do a wifi sync and never finishing. The little spinner is going on my iPhone and in the Finder sidebar. As you say, nothing seems to fix it short of forcing the Mac to restart. I tried plugging in the phone, shutting the phone off, force relaunching Finder... nothing works.

I do find, by the way, that you can at least get a somewhat more orderly shutdown by locking the computer and then picking "restart" from the login screen. You're asked for your Admin login and password, but it seems to force the machine to restart without having to mash that power button.

Thanks for that tip, I'll do that next time.
