ok.. currently I have a Sidekick LX with the Sidekick Data Service plan of $20.

I'm told for the iPhone and T-Mobile it is best to add the Total Internet package (which is the same price as the Sidekick plan so it's fine, because once I start using the iPhone that plan will be removed).

However, I am also told that this Total Internet Package is exclusively for Internet, and does not include free text. I would have to add another 14.99 to my bill for unlimited texting.. which I refuse to do..

A friend of mine, from whom I will be getting the iPhone says in her plan she gets free text and does not pay for Internet but can use her Internet wherever there is a WiFi connection.. (I'm not sure how true that is, I don't know how well she knows her phone or what her plan contains EXACTLY)

So I'm basically asking, does anyone know if this is true, and if so.. am I better off simply adding the Unlimited Texting plan for 14.99 and NOT putting the Total Internet package along with it since I supposedly can use it wherever WiFi is available?

ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLYYYYY APPRECIATED.. THANKS

1) Does your friend also have T-mobile?
2) The total internet package for 19.99 only includes internet access via EDGE, it is not a texting plan
3) If you are in an area with Wi-Fi then yes you can access the internet for free.

I have a Blackberry Curve with wifi and since I am a student we have campus-wide wifi and I just access the internet that way.

So it all depends on what your needs are.

I have t-mobile and have dealt with them for a while, let me know if you have any more questions.

Well first of all thanks for taking the time out and being so generous to help me.. i've posted this question on two other forums but no one has been nice enough to really help me..

and yes my friend does have T-Mobile..

so is it safe to say my best bet is to removed the internet plans from my account and add the 14.99 unlimited texting, since i can still use the internet in WiFi areas?

also, what's this i hear about T-Zones.. i'm not really sure how that works but i wouldnt mind adding that since it would only add $1 to the plan i have now.. (because i have the $20 sidekick plan.. which would be changed to 14.99 unlim texting plus 5.99 t-zones)

thanks again for the help

Your friend may have gotten some special deal through tmobile

t-zones is a way to access the internet for non-smart phones, I believe if you search around there is a hack that will allow you to use your iphone with t-zones but I am not sure as to the specifics - how well it works, etc...

if unlimited texting is more important, then add that and just go with using internet wherever you have access to wifi...now if you want to able to access the internet anywhere then that's when you need to use the data plan

if you just want to be be able to access your email, you can get the 9.99 email only data plan, which is what i use

thanks soooo much. you've been the only person on 3 forums to clearly tell me what i need to do.. thanks a lot

if you have a jailbroken tmobile phone (which im 99.99% sure u do), you can just add the community source from big boss for T zones. its $5.99 a month and then u can call 611 or w/e to activate that and cancel ur other plan. That way it'll be $21 with texting ($15) and unlimited intenret ($6)

however, i think its slower than normal edge speeds.
but i dunno, i never used normal edge since i started off w/ tzones.

thanks a LOTTT. that's exactly what i was thinking about doing.. but it's nice to hear someone suggest it

Yeah it's slower as it's through a proxy, much like opera mini handles webpages (downloads them on the opera server then sends them to your phones, essentially you're loading a web page twice).

But to answer the OP's question, I'm running an iPhone on T-mo with unlimited txting and no data plan. Wifi works well.

okay soo i have a blackberry pearl for tmobile right now. and i have unlimited txting with it.
and if i buy an iphone, the unlimited txting would be the same price.... right?
or would my bill dramatically rise?!?

I had unlimited texting thru T-Mobile before my iPhone and the price hasn't changed since getting an iPhone.

If you have decent T-mobile coverage, I think you can get 100+ kbps at least with the hack, which is about the same as the average AT&T plan, or T-mobile TIP.

that's what i did, using t-zone that is, and it was a great deal. at some area, the speed was quite good even with the tzone 5.99.

i didn't add on any text message stuff. in fact, i dont bother using text message anymore, because, why do you need the text message if you can email?

I think that the latency is much worse through the proxy server -- close to 1 second! While years ago, T-Zones and TIP used to be the same, that is no longer true: you can't do any streaming across T-Zones, so no internet radio or YouTube, for example. There may still be areas where these restrictions are not yet in effect, but rest assured that even the lucky few will feel the constraints soon.

I have also experienced many problems with T-Zones. It seems to work only 10% of the time.

I used the pwnage tool on 2.0 firmware, then installed the T-Zones hack through Cydia. Is there something else I'm missing here?

One question I have: What are your settings supposed to be under "Carrier"? Do you need to set it to "T-Mobile" or "Automatic"?

I have my carrier settings set to Automatic...

I am using the T-Zones hack and I haven't had any issues with it, but I don't use it that often I'm around a wifi connection 90% of the time, but I use it for email...

Do you suppose my problem is related to the SIM card? I read somewhere that people with older SIM cards have issues with voicemail notification. I also have the voicemail problem. (If you restart your phone, it shows that you have voicemail even though you don't). I'm wondering if this is related to the internet problem.

This has been true for me ever since I unlocked my iPhone -- I do get the voicemail indicator every time I reboot my iPhone.
