When I plug my iPhone 6SE into my 2019 iMac to charge, my iPhone displays the message "Unlock this iPhone to use accessories".

Which is strange, considering:
1: The iPhone is the accessory
2: The iPhone won't begin charging until it is unlocked.

I've scoured the web (google/apple forums) for a solution, and I do not want to disable the USB restricted mode on the iPhone, but would like it to charge when I plug it in. I do not mind having to unlock the iPhone for photo transfer and iTunes backups, but this is a bit ridiculous.

I've plugged in my phone several times to charge and walked away before noticing the message, only to return to a phone with a dead battery. Frustrating.

The terminology the message uses doesn’t explain each circumstance that triggers it. You can, if you desire to, disable the feature. Explanation here:

Edit: Sorry, after re-reading your post, I can see that you understand the information already.

Indeed.

I don't mind unlocking a phone in order to enable inter-device communication.

I 'do' mind unlocking a phone to charge it.

I’m sure this is obvious to you, but you don’t have to unlock it if you use a phone charger rather than your computer.

The accessory is the Lightning cable.

I don't think you need to unlock the iPhone to charge it. At least not any of my iPhones.

It is, but it isn't..... I have three lightning cables coming out of my cable management. Two from wall warts, one from my iMac. I've had to add color coded boots to know which one terminates where, so I do not find myself in the unfortunate position of having a dead phone that has been plugged in for an hour.
