So I currently have two phones, work & personal. I plan on keeping my personal one active just in case the work one falls through. My plan is to buy an android ATT go phone from bestbuy for $50 and put my sim in it. If this works, I can forward all sms and calls to my work phone. I have de-registered my personal number from iMessage so they should all be forwarded.

Should there be any issues with switching phones with ATT? Going from iPhone5 to a cheaper android go phone. From what I've heard my plan will switch automatically. I still have an old unlimited data plan so don't want any issues.

Isn't the point of pay as you go that there's no contract involved? Why put a prepaid phone on a smartphone plan?

The personal phone is on contract and I plan on keeping it. My plan was to use the go phone so I wouldn't have to upgrade my device. Android would allow me to forward sms to my work phone.

Why not just set up a google voice account (or whatever else works) on the go phone and forward from your contract line to the go phone so at&t can't mess with your unlimited plan? Then maybe forward google voice number to work phone?

Or just port your current contract number to the go phone if they allow that and change the number on your contract plan. Won't mess with unlimited and you could still forward to work phone..

Being on Verizon, I would just avoid giving them any chance to get rid of that unlimited plan after you activate the prepaid phone...

If you transition your phone to a non-smartphone, AT&T may move your grandfathered unlimited data plan, as you no longer need it. It should not be a problem, though, for your to swap sims between phones, as long as both are either AT&T or unlocked GSM phones.
