Right now the only reason i'm not getting an iPhone is the lack of memory, I have almost 20GB of music and nearly 50GB of video. Which is why i carry around my iPod Video. If they were to add a 16, 32 or 64GB flash memory, i'd sell my iPod and get an iPhone,

What i'm saying is that now with the iPhone, there's too many products in the product line, if they could narrow it down to maybe this...

iPod Shuffle 1GB
iPod Nano 4GB, 8GB, 16GB
iPhone 16GB, 32GB, 64GB
AppleTV

i think we'd see alot more people buying iPhones..just a thought

I really hope Apple goes in this direction. I think they will do very well with an all-in-one device that works seamlessly. I find myself carrying around my nano, but not my cell phone since that becomes too much for my pockets. I sometimes wish my nano could do things my phone can do (input contact info, calendar items). I also wish I could access the most important thing in my life: The Internet. With one device for all that and more I can see myself (a high school student) spending the money for a great device that handles all I need it to.

Students can easily find the money for any number of things if they want them bad enough, and a device like this could be exactly what we've been looking for.

Looking around at the number of students with ipod nanos and videos, apple could really do well by condensing their product lines to really stress the ease-of-use Apple mentality of an all-in-one.

Also, when the iPhone was announced, my first thought was "Now why will anyone buy an iPod?"

I don't think so. First off, the iPhone market will be big enough. 2nd, there will be an iPhone like true video iPod that doesn't require contracts etc, and because it's not a phone and camera too, will have more space in it. Probably also finally incorporate bluetooth. But it will take a few more months still. Imagine how much a 32 or 64GB iPhone would cost right now.

No they wont do this. Because Not everyone has a cingular contract (even if they add more not eveyone wants a cell phone)

What about those that want a video iPod and not a new phone with a cingular contract? I dont think they would phase out the Video iPod, theres still a market for it and it seems to be doing well.

Apple's iPod approach

With the current buzz surrounding the iPhone, Apple would be crazy to introduce a iPod video simmilar to the iPhone (widescreen, touch, ect.), before the launch of the iPhone. My guess would be that months after the release of the iPhone, apple will announce/release the 6G iPod video. In all practicallity, the iPhone is not for the average consumer, but apple is not about to lose prospective to one of their own products. Look for the 6G's in late october, early november.

Once the exclusive contract with AT&T expires, and they can sell unlocked iPhones, I think you'll see the Nanos at least being phased out.

I could see Apple trying to merge the two into one device but I think they would have to keep the nano and shuffle as strictly music players. They could eventually (with flash memory getting cheaper/more space) have nanos with ~50gb or or more for those that just want music players and not phone. The only problem they would have to overcome is the pricing scheme. Knowing how much the iPhone is would always make me say "Wow, if they took out the cellphone capabilities (and even all the maps, safari, address book etc etc to just make it an ipod with the ability to flip the screen, use cover flow, etc) it would be so much cheaper.
