I've had to do re-install of OS X so iCal, apps etc now empty of data. I need to connect my iPhone soon. How do I get the iPhone to update OS X and not the other way round where i'll lose everything all together.

Did you really "have" to do a re-install? And why did you do a clean one without a backup?

The iPhone will sync Address Book contacts and iCal events back to your computer, but pictures and music will be deleted.

I realise I may have been hasty in the re-install of OS X. I have all my photos and music backed up. My main concern now is not to lose any contact data from contacts and diary entries on iCal. As I say, I have all this on the iPhone but not on mac. Don't want mac to over ride iPhone until I can get data off. Do I just sync as usual ?

No. it will be erased. You'll have to find a program that can copy this information over. Most cost money, if not all of them. You might be able to start a mobileme free trial and have it sync up your stuff for you.
