Hello. Non-traditional smartphone users here...

There has been a lot of talk in the news about how companies and the gov't track cell-phone users.

Considering that I only use my iPhoen as a comarea and it does NOT have a SIM card in it, do I need to be concerned about "tracking"?

No SIM card means that your phone is not communicating with any cell phone towers. Unless the government has some other way of tracking your phone, you should be "track free".

(In theory, this is unproven), it could still be recording your touches (applications are known to track user input). Then uploading to a server tied to your Apple ID or device identifier when you sync the device.

So, in theory, the only way my iPhone can communicate with the outside world would be through Wi-Fi, right?

I guess another issue would be if I used some app that when I was connected to Wi-Fi ended up "phoning home" then I might have to worry about tracking, right?

The only apps I have used on my iPhone thus far is the camera app and a few times I have used the calculator when I am traveling and want to figure out gas-mileage.

But as far as I know, I have the Wi-Fi part locked down.

So it sounds like I should be safe from any tracking?

But that would require me connecting to the Internet or a cell network, right?

No, a device can upload its tracking data on how you use the device if you plug it into iTunes or Finder (theoretically). Location cannot be tracked if you don't have Wifi or Cellular enabled.
