How is this possible. Its happened around 6-7 times. I'm rarely at my dad house so I doubt this is just by chance. Any ideas?

If the batteries are dead when it turns off then it's likely you have no signal.

When the phone is searching for a sig the battery drains really fast.

I have full signal and the battery isnt dead when I turn it back on

I dunno... this could potentially be some weird signal that's coming off something up there, that when the iPhone picks it up, it crashes... My friend has a dead zone on his screen that when he touches it in that spot it locks the screen, so it could be anything...
