So my friend really wants to try the new beta 4.0 and he found someone on craigslist advertising that they are a developer and for $10 they would add his UDID to their account. He doesn't mind paying the $10 but he asked me if there were any risks to giving out your phones UDID on craigslist... Like is there anything malicious someone can do if they have this info? I had no idea how to answer him since I don't know what the UDID does other than identify your specific unit for itunes (I think) Does anyone know the answer to this?

Well, I think it's a violation of the developer agreement. So I would skip it for that.
Beyond that, why get involved in a beta for 4.0 and it's inherent bugs and issues? Just to be able to say "I have 4.0, look how cool I am"?

I'd encourage your friend to save his $ and any headaches and wait for 4.0 legit.

only the guy selling the service would be in violation of the agreement.
your friend would not be violating anything since he did not agree to anything.

as for giving out the UDID, im not sure what someone can do with it if there was any malicious intent.

Unless you are developing apps I would recommend avoiding the iPhone OS 4.0 beta.

It is very buggy and the new features are not particularly ground breaking at this stage. There aren't any apps available that support multi-tasking.

I'd wait until the summer.

Ive come to find it quite stable, as opposed to the 3.0 beta last year :)

I'll let him know that the UDID probably wont be used for anything malicious but that he should stay away from 4.0 until a good public release. I did tell him that most people who have it, install it on a second iphone for developing but he still wanted it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7D11 Safari/531.21.10)

I disagree. It's quite stable and almost ready for primetime if you ask me.
