iPhone UK MMS ? Come On For Gods Sake !

When I bought my first iphone on realease date in the uk I understood that MMS would not be coming, I spoke to the Apple genius people and they explained that the amount of programming needed to get an MMS message from a 3G phone to and iPhone with EDGE was emense therefore O2 would probably not do it........

However, I now have the 3G iPhone which is obvioudly 3G and would like the ability to send and recieve MMS, The ability to Forward received SMS would also be a welcome treat aswell !!!!

Before I get loads of replies saying why would I want MMS when I can send full sizes images via email, the answer is, Because I DO !!!

A lot of my friends send me MMS and I can recieve them via the brilliant site by Ross McKillop - http://o2mms.net/ but I just want it to be a standard feature of the iPhone in one of the next firmware upgrades.

To all UK iPhone user that want a easy way to see recieved MMS without going through the O2 MMS portal, use the site above, I think its awesome....

IRELLEVANT POST, I think its pretty obvious that iPhone wont be able to do that, but nearly all 3G phones can send and recieve MMS messages, its the bread and butter of mobile communication........

if you can't contribute anything sensible keep your lame retorts to yourself !

i know this sucks i wish you can also unlock the damn phone so i wouldnt have to pay roaming charges but its really ironic that this phone is soooo "sophisticated" that it cant even have simple things that other phones had for years :/ what can we do we love it for its simplicity but lacks alot while a blackberry or blackjack has everything but it lacks the simplicity

Excactly, as things evolve they are supposed to get better !!!

Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is amazing......

But if you had a car in the 80's with electric windows and power steering, you wouldn't expect to buy a new 2008 model with radar assisted cruise control, voice activated control but then find out that your electric windows and power steering have been left off.......

The iphone should have evolved keeping its basic functions aswell !

MMS is hardly the bread and butter of the teleco industry in any country. You're just not seeing the forest through the trees, Like it or not, MMS is dead or at least dying. More and more smartphones that offer full email will see to that.

Your view is the same as when SMS/Texting came out and people were all in arms. "Oh no, how can I send short text messages to my friends who can't see them or send them back?" "Woe is me."

If a third-party App Store app could offer this functionality, fine. But there are still enough features that the iPhone lacks (landscape text, copy & paste, etc) without people QQing about a feature that is soon to be obsolete.


Also, I think I know what I'm talking about. I lived in Singapore/SE Asia for 8 years till a few months ago and texting/SMS/MMS was big there far longer than the UK or USA. MMS was good for what it did but it really is a function headed for extinction. RIP.

The fact that MMS could be almost obsolete in the US is not relevant. Everywhere else in the world it is not. We've had MMS for years and for the average Joe that's not gonna change. People don't want to use email on the phone. Average people just want to send a message and "it just works". That's MMS.

It's hardly dying. In the beginning people would barely use MMS. Now everyone does, over here in Europe at least.

Jobs can't impose everything on the world. The mobile industry is too way big to just come and say "hey I think MMS are obsolete, so come on everybody start using emails"

1) MMS "just work"
2) You use the telephone number, no need to store the email address (most people use the SIM's phonebook which only allows storage of name and phone number)
3) 90% of subscribers don't have data plans. Using email involves having a data plan
4) More over, MOST people DO NOT WANT internet on the phones. They just want a phone. SMS and MMS are phone things. Email is internet thing.

anyway, it depends on personal habit. i live in the uk and have never sent or received an mms, and i guess many people also have not
but then there are also many people that will want to use mms
it was known the iphone doesn't do mms, so why did you buy it?

i know email is the way to go and i even use my mobileme to email some friends that have push in leu of texting (when mobileme wants to cooperate)

but you have to understand that not everyone has or even wants a smartphone. not having the backwards compatibility is a killer for some of us. I think that the arguement isnt akin to your blu-ray vs betamax, but more of consumers wanting a feature and apple not giving a sh:t about it. almost if sony or whoever came out with the most badass blu-ray player of all time but it didnt have the FF or REW buttons on it... and sony replying: thats what chapters are for.

it sucks if i know someone is on vacation and i want to send them a quick picture of something funny at the time that loses its punch 5-6 days later when they come home and check it on their email.



I want the MMS feature in the iphone and i know many more people that want it too, but with that said, i do not know anyone that passed over the iphone for that reason. wins.

Seriously guys (and gals), why does this topic always cause such a heated debate on these forums?!?! It is no big deal, some people want MMS, and others don't. Why do people who don't want this feature always have to bash people that do, and vice verse?

Surely Apple should provide this feature, and please the numberous people that would use it. I mean, you don't have to use every feature that comes with a phone if you don't want to

O2MMS.net allows you to SEND and RECEIVE MMS on the iPhone. Though, at the moment, sending is not cheap.

That's a very broken analogy, given the main thing people used the USB port on in those early iMacs was to plug in a floppy disk drive. If Apple had put up an optional app for MMS you might have a point, but you don't.

It is also worth noting that at the time sales of floppies were actually declining. Thus descriptions of it as a "dying" technology were accurate.

The amount of MMS's sent worldwide has consistently increased every month since the iPhone came out. That's not "dying". It's the very opposite.

Certainly in the UK the reason I hear over and over again for why people don't buy an iPhone is "bluetooth doesn't work and no MMS."

Plus a lot of people use free e-mail services like hotmail and can't get them on phones unless you use the browser.

I bought the iPhone because i believed i could live without the Bluetooth File Exchange and the MMS, but ultimately i couldn;t so the iPhone wasn't for me, I sold it and use my Nokia N95 8GB

I think its a good thing. Apple killed the floppy, the legacy ports, and within a few years the DVD drive will suffer the same fate. Apple purposely leave features out to push the technology industry forward.

Only time will tell if it will become completely obsolete but the point is, it'll be a reasonably long time before it does become obsolete.

Out of a pretty large circle of friends and colleagues/contacts, I'd say maybe 25% have smart phones. Of those, I'd say half use them to email rather than MMS.

The fact is, MANY people (particularly in the UK from my experience) use MMS and want the functionallity on the iPhone.

I've certainly submitted it. Multiple times. I am no longer convinced Apple listen to the feedback channel and complaints here - which have been known to be reflected in mainstream press attention - are much more likely to get actually acted upon.

Good man, i for the life of me cant understand all the bitching that goes on here and cant see why if you want to bitch about something that should have or want's, maybe a stickie should be made were you can list request's that gets forwarded to Apple say once a month, job done problem solved
