iPhone UMA option?

This has been discussed before but not for a while so I thought I would bring it up. WHY was this option not chosen over the microcells, node b at homes or whatever there called? I mean you can get allot more callers over wifi than you can over these microcells...think about it imagine if every smart phone had this capability you could have every office building allow it's workers to make calls over wifi taking the stress off nearby towers. Phones on T-Mobile can do it why can't the nations largest GSM carrier do it? (can an iPhone on tmobile do this tho?). I mean there's google voice but that's no replacement at all...discuss...

If they enabled UMA, you could receive unlimited calling at any Wi-Fi hotspot (ala T-Mobile's service). That translates to a lot less needed minutes.

With AT&T's microcell, not only are you charged for the microcell, you can only get your unlimited calling at your home. This equals more money for AT&T.

AT&T's microcell solution works with all AT&T 3G phones, not just the smaller selection of smartphones with WiFi.

I'm pretty sure they could come up with a protocol to make it so you were charged even over wifi. Maybe like a VPN type connection that monitors your call connection time and status. Its certainly not that difficult....

Yes I realize that I was just mentioning smartphones as I generally see that as a business phone.
