iPhone unlocking or jailbreaking - not sure what I need

Hi there,

My housemate has an iPhone and we are both on Orange. Hypothetically speaking, when you report a lost iPhone and gain a new one via insurance, they lock the old phone right?

Still hypothetically speaking here, if I were to put my orange sim card in this 'lost' phone (we are both on contracts) would it operate/work? Or for full functionality would I need to unlock or jailbreak the phone? Would all functions work as normal? Particularly internet.

Also, would it better to attempt this a) by myself, b) to one of those 'shops' that unlock phones, or c) use this site - http://iphone.unlock.no/ - which I heavy to say looks very suspect. I don't really want to do irreversible damage to an iPhone so if anyone has any advice that would be great.

you obviouslly have no idea

when a phone is reported stolen/lost in the uk its imei number is placed on a black list. meaning it can no longer receive signal. therefore it is just a fat ipod touch...

you cannot change the imei number of the phone, therefore it cannot be used ever again
 
TBH this sounds like this is a shady question. If you really lost the phone I don't think you would be asking this. If you lost the phone it becomes property of the insurance company and it is your obligation to return it to them regardless of if you "find" it in the future.
 
You'll have to jailbreak it and unlock.
But if the service provider has blacklisted the IMEI there isnt anything you can do with it besides sell it to someone outside of the UK.
The link you posted is about 1.5 year old and only applies to the iphone 2G with ancient firmware.
