I've been on the iPhone Upgrade Program for 5 years. Up until this year I always had it delivered and then sent in my old phone with trade-in kit. This year I chose in-store pickup and trade-in instead and I hope it goes smoothly.

I searched all over the forum and couldn't find an answer to a question I have. When I pick up the new phone at the Apple Store do I have to activate it right there in the store, or can I take the sealed iPhone box home and activate it later?

Take the sealed box home. Did it this morning.

This afternoon, I went back and tuned in my 13 Pro

I’m not sure if you already found the answer but these days when they ring you out, the only option they choose is “Activate it Later” so yes, you do not need to set it up at the store.

It went quick yesterday. I transferred my esim to another iPhone before arriving and had my phone all factory reset.

They looked at my old phone, took it and gave me a receipt showing loan balance of zero. Then they gave me the new sealed phone and I left.
