I have been on the iPhone Upgrade plan for the last few years. On Friday, I chose to upgrade my iPhone 11 Pro to and iPhone 12 Pro. Initially, I planned to send my old phone back and complete the upgrade...

... but my wife cracked the screen on her iPhone XS. I'm looking at a $280 screen replacement cost. It got me thinking - what if I didn't send back my iPhone 11 Pro and instead gave it to her? As I understand it, Apple anticipated this and said that if I don't send back the phone, I am on the hook for finishing payments on the phone. I am OK with the 600 expense for a 1 year newer phone than 280 for the older phone.

Has anyone done this? I don't want to end on a bad Apple list or be prevented from upgrading my iPhone 12 Pro next year. Any advice? Thanks!!

As you stated. You’ll just have 2 IUP payments until the old one is paid off.

Thanks both for your replies. I guess I was getting a little confused because apple requires a phone number when purchasing, so i assumed that the IUP is tied to a single phone number. If i kept both, there would be two IUP plans active.

I realize this is a late reply but I have actually done this, and literally nothing happens except you then make both payments (or pay the old one off early if you want). I ended up giving the older phone to my husband for Christmas. That was last Christmas. I then pre-qualified this iPhone upgrade season as normal, no hiccups for not sending the old one back.

You can't actively set up a second iUP for the same phone number without actually acting like you're going to send the old phone back. But when it comes time to actually send it back, they just resume the loan if you don't.
