TL;DR — Don't make a typo, and don't expect them to help you figure out what the real problem is if you didn't make a typo.

I was declined because they were "Unable to verify credit references as provided." When trying to find out specifically what that meant and what I could do about it, they were exceedingly unhelpful.

It took a week of me calling Citizens One and pestering them to get any information. The first time I explained the situation and what the notice meant. Each time it was "It'll take 48 hours for our research team to get back to you," "It'll take 72 hours," "It takes 5 business days," "You have to wait for them to call you back--oh wait there's new information for you." To be clear, they never once called me when I was told they would, and ultimately the research team came back with was "We were unable to verify your credit references as provided."

So I had to hassle them for a week for them to tell me what I already know. They said I must have made a typo (I didn't), and to call Equifax and verify my information (now two companies removed from Apple). Once I verify the information, try applying in 30 days. Because apparently you can only apply once every 30 days. Even if you made a typo.

Every time I talked to Citizens One they were rude, impatient, and unhelpful. Very un-Apple.

And so while I stayed up preorder night to be one of the first to try to get a phone, instead I've had to wait 7 days to be told to wait 30 days and still haven't been told how to fix the actual problem. At this rate I'll be excited if I get a phone before 2017.

The upgrade program is actually pretty bad. Carrier programs are far superior. More stock is available to you during preorder and it's easier to extract yourself from those programs. Also, with AT&T at least, after your year is up you can just hand your phone back without buying a new one. You can't do that with Apple, they won't give you full trade in value without you buying a new phone. There's literally NO advantage to the IUP.
I joined last year and this years process has made me greatly regret it. May just get an additional phone through NEXT and sell this one to get out.
 
That's good to keep in mind...I may just do ATT Next then. The one advantage I could see is that it comes with Apple Car, which saves the $129, so in theory it's a better deal. But, this hassle is not worth it.

No they actually charge you for AppleCare, it's baked into the monthly payment. You're paying for it, not getting it for free. That's why the program starts from $32.41.
I'm serious, zero advantage to the program.

I also saw a $20 "upgrade charge" from Verizon when I set my wife's phone last night at the Apple Store, so I'll have to try and get that waived...

After this year, I'm inclined to agree. I did the IUP for the 6s and the 7, but I might switch to Verizon's program next time and sell the 7s outright to pay off the citizens loan. The hard inquiry every year, the lack of stock for reservations, etc.

If they make big changes to the program next year and make it more consumer friendly, I'll consider doing it again. If not, Verizon is probably the way to go.
 
I'm on ATT. Love NEXT.

My sister went into a BB Mobile Store and picked up a Verizon RG 128 7.

She added Applecare right there at the store and she gets to pay $8/month for the service. I verified it was actually Applecare and it is, with the $30 screen replacement and all.

You know I wrote this post and I actually don't know the hell why.

I'm serious, zero advantage to the program.

It is a higher monthly fee, but from looking at the AT&T website it looks like they would also charge an upgrade fee of $20 and a restocking fee of $45, as well as AppleCare+ ($129). So when I run the numbers it looks like iUP is about $130 cheaper. But...I don't know that it's even worth that at this point.
