So, when the iPhone was announced in January, I went online to check my upgrade eligibility and was happy to see it was this spring.
Today, I was checking on my bill and decided to verify the upgrade eligibility date and had a brief "panic attack" when it showed 9/07.
I called AT&T and after the standard "no, you must have been mistaken" (she was very nice, though), I got to the bottom line of whether I will be able to upgrade to the iPhone. She went off line to check on this particular situation and the bottom line is yes.
Here's the policy as it was stated to me this afternoon (well, paraphrased):
The iPhone pricing is not discounted or affected by upgrade eligibility. It does require a 2 year commitment, which starts on the day of purchase. It doesn't extend your current contract, if any. In my case, I have like 6 months left, so my current contract and the new one overlap, time wise. However, the new contract supersedes the old, entirely. I'm hoping my new contract expires on 6/29/09
So, the purchase policy is literally as advertised: it's $499 or $599 for everybody AND you have to sign up for 2 years.

edit: another question I asked was whether, as a current customer, I can do the deal at either store. Yes, it doesn't matter - either Apple or AT&T can handle it.
