The iPhone is rated for up to 250 hrs standby, 8 hrs talk time, 6 hrs internet, 7 hrs video and 24 hrs of audio playback or realistically some mix of all of these and most likely 90% or so of these figures in real world usage.
My original iPhone was getting just over 2 days (48-60 hrs) of standby along with less than 2 hrs general usage and less than 1 hour of calls per charge cycle which was rather disappointing consider I hadn't used bluetooth, talked much or even tried to watch a movie. And after reading the Microsoft-Watch article which the writer claimed having charged his phone 3 times in 2 weeks, I called Applecare took my iPhone and case number to an Apple Store and left with a replacement.
Am I glad I did! I decided to perform a little test on my new iPhone to see what sort of performance I could get. How realistic was that standby time? Not actually using it any less, but also not playing with it just for the sake of enjoying the features I used my iPhone as follows:
no Wi-Fi
did not use Safari as I did not need it (I am near a computer enough for internet access)
did not use iPod (I have a Nano and use that in the car, etc)
no Bluetooth as I don't have a headset yet
set mail to manual checking
I did use the alarm every day, the calendar daily for input and retreival, contacts, calls, SMS, voicemail, google maps, and mail when needed.
My usage stats after 6 1/2 days on a single full charge with 5% battery remaining were (relative to Apple's spec ratings):
Usage 6 Hours 16 minutes
Standby 6 Days 9 Hours - 153 total hours (61%)
Call Time 1 hour 20 minutes (17%)
General Usage then equates to 17% of the total battery which again did not include any internet or video playback but did use EDGE for mail and mapping.
So you could easily say that my replacement iPhone has been more than satisfactory and that even with increased talk time, internet and even BT or Wi-Fi enabled I expect more than a day or two out of a single charge, a significant improvement over my original unit.
