iPhone volume low (despite set to highest)

Over the last few weeks I noticed that the volume of my iPhone is lower than it should be. It still works OK as an iPod, but especially phone conversations voices (incoming and outgoing) are barely audible.

Is it possible that the speakers break in less than a year? Or is there a software setting I might have overlooked?

is there a posibility that some sort of volume lock has been increased? i know that with my ipod you can limit the maximum volume... maybe that has been turned on on your iphone (no idea if you can actually do this, just troubleshooting).

Thanks. That's a beginning. I will check if I can find such a setting!

Update: I find a "sound check" option and some googling revealed that at least some people blame this setting for a lower volume. I also found a maximum volume setting, both in iPod settings. I switched off the sound check and will now see if this affects the phone voice volume. Thanks for the idea.

Didn't seem to affect the phone volume. Phone calls incoming and outgoing are still very difficult to hear.

Any further ideas?

If you're jailbroken there is an app in Cydia called....volume boost.

First generation or 3G? I moved to the 3G because of this very problem with my original device. It's MUCH better. And the ringer volume is also much louder - I don't miss calls anymore because I didn't hear it ringing.
