So, been really leaning forward to buy an iPhone or an iPod Touch, if you could clear my mind up...

Info:
-Have no cellphone;
-Have no music player (my old sony discman is broken for 2 years now);
-Have no camera (I know 2 mp isn't much, bu it's enough for me);
-Some PSP games and the PSP price is really biting my ass;

So, searched on the wiki and forums, and they all seem to point to the fact that the iPhone has a better processor (ARM 1170 instead of iPT 640) and a 3D acelerator.
Is this true? I always thought the iPod Touch was an iPhone with no phone...

Besides, a PSP has a 333mhz processor and only 64 mb of ram, wich the iPod Touch and iPhone overcomes... will it be possible in the future a PSP emulator? (forget the controler issues)

I don't know about the possibility of future PS emulation on the iPhone, but the iPod Touch isn't just an iPhone without the phone. It is also lacking a camera, Bluetooth and contact manager, and it's been made clear that significant upgrades (apps, 2.0 firmware) will be charged for.

Doubt there would be a PSP emulator for the iPhone. The iPhone should just be a music player and phone to me, nothing more. I'd hate to play games on it but that's just me.

1. The iPhone is the best thing that ever happened to me.

2. You can already get PSX games on the iPhone using an emulator. (also NES and GBA games)

;)

While PSP emulation is THEORETICALLY possible, it's unlikely to happen. There's the issue with how to control it, but more importantly, the general rule for emulation (I could have this wrong) is that the emulator's processor must be ten-twenty times faster than the thing you're emulating for anywhere near decent performance. With EXTREMELLY well coded emulators this isn't the case (ie, the PSP's native PS1 emulator), but it is unlikely to see this happen.

I'd think we'd see PS1 emulation get a lot better long before we see anything like PSP or DS emulation.

From my understanding the PSP is actually faster than the iPhone/Touch GPU wise. So there won't be any real way to emulate the PSP on the iPhone/Touch.

Yeah, I know that, just wanted to abreviate ;)

Yeah, didn't really wanted to know if we would have one, because I know even for PC/mac there isn't one, but wanted to know if we would have games with such graphical quality as Chains of Olympus or Ridge Racer...

Thanks to all for the responses but there's still one left... is there any Processing difference between the iPhone and the iPod Touch? If the SDK is for both, shouldn't the apps be only limited by vibration/camera/bluetooth
and other stuff missing on the iPT?

Oh, and I really bet you're being honest when you say the iPhone is the best damn cellphone you've ever had, but I'm living in Portugal, an area full of 3G, where there are already rumors of the iPhone being sold (officially) in March/May (3g, maybe?), so, buying an iPhone in the US and having the 3G iPhone with warranty a couple of months later is a bit of a disapointment...

Psp

The PSP has far superior speed and gaming power. The PSP can run N64 games while running them on the touch is unimaginable. As for the web, PSP supports flash animation and javascript, while the ipod does not. The PSP Go has bluetooth just like the ipod. The best part of PSP? NO ITUNES!!

have u noticed that this thread is like 2 years old....your complaining to nobody...try checking the date next time before bringing up dead threads.

PSP emulation seems pretty unlikely....yea,the iPhone has the hardware bet, but not likely by enough to get a possible emulator out.

And I know you said ignoring the controller issues...but thats a big negative for anyone thinking about making psp emulator

iPod does support javascript...

It probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense to add anything more to this old thread, and most of this is common knowledge anymore, but just so people don't get confused...

...at the time the question was posed, the iPod Touch and the iPhone both had the exact same CPU and GPU. Neither one had a hardware processing power advantage over the other.

...after the iPod Touch 2nd generation came out half a year after this was posted, it had the same basic CPU and GPU as the iPhone still, but had a slight advantage as the CPU core was running at a higher clockrate than either iPhone model (which were both matched with each other and with the first iPod Touch model)

...the iPhone 3GS leapfrogged the 2nd gen Touch in both CPU and GPU performance, only to have it matched by the iPod Touch 3rd gen a few short months later.

So, in general, iPhone and iPod Touch raw number-crunching specs/benchmarks should be equal, though there have been occasions where the latest model of either product has had the upper-hand (as is to be expected when any newer hardware comes out).

All sorts of wrong.

Nice try troll, nice try.

The iPhone/iPod touch, is an awesome media, web, mini computer, that does gaming pretty well.
The PSP is an awesome gaming device, that does everything else, pretty badly.
Browsing on a PSP is to be avoided at the best of times, and it plays mp3's, sure, but it's as basic as it gets.

The iPhone, especially the 3GS and latest-gen Touch, have better hardware, in terms of performance, but devs don't seem to want to fully harness that power, instead, only catering(understandably) for the larger number of people, who have the older hardware.
My PSP has gathered dust, for over 2 years now.

Dude, iTunes is the shizznit. LOL I hope that I didn't just break any rules. Btw, I <3 the iPod touch corrective spelling.

That's probably the best summation you will find. I use both, but find the PSP far superior for games - they are more in-depth, they last longer, and the physical controls give them a greater level of playability.

The iPhone has some good games, but nothing as playable as a PSP (IMHO). The graphics quality are similar, so it surprises me that iPhone games generally aren't quite at the level of PSP games. They seem to be more of "play for 10 mins on a train" type games, whereas PSP games I've seen me sitting for hours on end on certain games.

The iPhone does everything else however way way better than the PSP. It simply blows the PSP out of water for web browser, media playback etc.
