i saw that both devices have a frequency of 240 hz. I can't explain those migraines on Iphone's oled. Which is your daily driver?

Any other users?

I've owned quite the range of AMOLED phones over the last several years and haven't noticed any eye strain. Just this year, I've used for a few months at a time: Pixel 2 XL, Galaxy S9, OnePlus 6, Note 9, and now iPhone Xs Max and haven't had any issues. I know some people are more sensitive to OLED panels than others.

Maybe a difference between Samsung and LG OLED panels. Get a loaner of each or play with in-store demo and see for yourself since everybody reacts differently.

S9+ owner here. The only time I had an issue with my S9+ was for about two weeks. It was after using my XS Max for several days sensitized me to migraine triggers I could not even go to the store where LED lights are used and could suddenly see massive flickering on my Samsung display. It took weeks to go back to normal and now I can use my S9+ and no, I can’t see the flickering anymore.

I absolutely loved my XS Max for many other of its features and design but I think somebody decided to make it a device with which to summon Satan. ;):p

In all seriousness, I did feel pretty sick. I had a couple of days where it seemed like it was going to work out and then bam, I was showing signs of going into migraine induced seizures if I didn’t put that phone back in the box and ship it back to Apple.

Someone had posted a link on MR to an article (unfortunately I can’t locate that post again) that describes how Apple implemented its own patented power management system above and beyond the kind Samsung implements. They do it to reduce risk of burn in. I guess burning out some people’s brains is preferable. Hey it’s only about 10% of us, we’re expendable!

But it’s not all on Apple. My Pixel 2 has a flickery display that irritates my eyes, too. I don’t get sick as a dog the way I do on an iPhone with OLED, but it’s irritating anyway. And a few generations ago one of my Samsung phones gave me eye strain but I don’t remember which one of them did that. Again, I didn’t get sick, but my eyes were fatigued.

I recall reading the post you're speaking of but I didn't follow the link so I didn't read the actual article. I've recently used a S9 and didn't have any issues (but it was only for about 5-10 minutes so not really enough to test), so I'm curious if Samsung is doing something differently as they've been using OLED screens for awhile now, perhaps they've done more research on it and have found a way to prevent even the most sensitive. With how many incentives are usually offered on Samsung devices, I'm slightly tempted to try one out.

Tried iPhone X when it was launched last year for 10 days.. and return it because of eye strain.. My eyes doesn't focused iPhone X screen somehow.. It's like you wear glasses which doesn't belong to you...

After iPhone X, I bought Note 8, now I have Note 9.. I dont experienced eye strain or any other inconvenience with samsung oled panels.. IMHO, Note 9 display seems has best oled panel on earth.. Not just about post subject, every other aspect..

I've used amoled since the galaxy S1, I've never experienced eyestrain.
The last time I did was on an old CRT monitor.

I’ve never had eye strain with either but I think it seems that it’s less common with Samsung panels.

My Note 8 gives me zero eye issues but funnily enough when I swap to my LCD IPS 2k Huawei MediaPad I get blurred eyes and I'm not sure if this is because I'm used to the AMOLED Samsung or noto_O

Since 2010 I have owned nothing but AMOLED Display phones, starting with the Nokia N8 and then Samsung Galaxy S2 in 2011, and I have never had eyestrain. This seems to be an Apple thing.

My mother owns a iPhone X, S7 Edge and I have recently given her my Galaxy Note8 as she was complaining about the iPhone X display.

I’d never even heard of this eye strain thing until the iPhone X came out. When I was using the note 1, note 3, S4 and S5 I never saw anyone mention anything about eyes strain on the forums. My husband has been on Samsung phones since the S3 and has not had any issues either.

Apple eye strain isn’t really OLED related. Most people don’t have issues with other OLED displays. And many people have issues with iPad Pro 2nd Gen or newer and Apple OLEDs only. And some people even have issues with new Apple LCDs on iPhones I think. The problem is isolated to Apple.

If it was a problem related to Apple, why did somebody in this thread talk about having issues with other OLED?
