iPhone vs Samsung, security type question

So my brother n law woke up yesterday morning and his IPhone 5 was asking for his Apple ID and PW. Idk why it did that but it did and he keeps all his PW in a note in his now locked phone. He tried so many pws that he got locked out and can't remember even what email he used some years ago to set it up with. I told them that I think the ph is a lost cause if he can't remember his email and there all upset and if they have to buy a new ph they are going to Samsung.

I tried to tell her that I'd say they all have some kind of security now days but she says you can take a locked Samsung to Verz and they will simply unlock it for you. I didn't argue with her because I'm an Apple guy and truly don't know what Samsung is up to on that front. Can Verz unlock a Samsung?

He can prove the phone is his but I don't think even Apple can/would help with this problem.

So the phone was iCloud Activation Locked? That doesn't ask for an email address, it just needs a password, and I'm not sure it "locks out" upon trying as it's already essentially locked out. If things are stored in notes, perhaps they are on iCloud as well and could be accessed via http://www.icloud.com ?

The trouble is he can't ever remember setting up or using the t.....@icloud address that it shows in the image and entering his regular address doesn't work and he tried the pages on Apple where you go to reset your PW. I told them it's a lost cause and to write the info down outside of the phone when he gets another one.

Well, it sounds like having a receipt for the device to prove ownership when contacting Apple about it might be the only option left.

Update: He was able to finally get Verz to give him a receipt, they dont go back past 18 months but finally wrote him one out on letterhead and Apple accepted it and unlocked his phone remotely some how. He can now trade it in and get a $300 credit toward a new iPhone 7+
